Alan Shearer makes clear Benjamin Šeško claim amid Man Utd form, ‘I was critical…’

Alan Shearer has been speaking about Benjamin Šeško amid his strong form at Manchester United recently.

Manchester United return to Old Trafford on Sunday to take on Crystal Palace, encouraged by a well-earned 1–0 victory at Everton earlier this week.

Since Michael Carrick stepped into the managerial role, United have taken 16 points from a possible 18, a run that has lifted them to fourth place in the Premier League. They now hold a three-point advantage over Chelsea in fifth.

Crystal Palace’s season has unfolded quite differently. After celebrating FA Cup success last year, Oliver Glasner has been guiding the club through a transitional spell following the exits of several influential figures, leaving the Eagles down in 13th.

Their dramatic late win over Wolves marked only their second triumph in 16 outings. Despite that boost, belief within the squad remains tentative as they continue to juggle domestic responsibilities with ambitions in the Europa Conference League.

Shearer makes clear Šeško claim amid Man Utd form

One of the main question marks ahead of this clash is whether Benjamin Šeško will start after scoring in three of the last four games off the bench.

The young striker has now scored eight goals for United since joining in the summer despite the fact he has only started in 11 Premier League games.

Alan Shearer has spoken about the Slovenian and explained that it will be time to judge Šeško properly when he is starting consistently.

“I was critical of the price that Manchester United paid for Benjamin Sesko. He’s done well when called upon for them recently,” Shearer told Betfair.

“There’s obviously a reason why Michael Carrick is not starting him. When he starts playing games on a regular basis, 12 or 15 games on the spin, that would be the time to judge him. But as a substitute coming on and scoring goals, he’s doing a job.

“Carrick has obviously put a belief in and a structure the players are comfortable with.  It’s remarkable they are in that position, they’re in there because of him and there’s no way they would have been there if he wasn’t there.

“They are finding a way to win or not lose games, which is a great sign. He’s given them a very realistic chance at Champions League football.”

Šeško game-time is not a problem

It is slightly strange that there is a clamour for Šeško to start every game now, especially since most of these people were criticising the fact that Rasmus Højlund had no backup last term.

Šeško could start on Sunday against Crystal Palace but it also wouldn’t be the end of the world if he comes off the bench in that game too.

It is a benefit that United do not need to rely on him every game and that he can make an impact off the bench, and it will help him in the longer-term.

Shearer and others may be suggesting that he can’t be judged until he’s a consistent starter but those at United will not be paying much attention to those claims.
