Legendary Premier League striker Alan Shearer has revealed the Manchester United player who he feels will be a “miss” at the 2024 European Championships.

The 2024 European Championships kicks off on Friday evening, with Germany hosting Scotland in the opening game.

Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes have been preparing with Portugal, while Kobbie Mainoo will make his professional debut for England, with Luke Shaw also in Gareth Southgate’s squad. Tom Heaton will join the training squad but he will not feature for England.

Scott McTominay will be a talisman for Scotland, and Altay Bayındır will be vying for Turkey’s goalkeeping spot. Finally, Rasmus Højlund and Christian Eriksen will carry Denmark’s hopes for Germany this summer.

However, Alan Shearer has explained that he feels Harry Maguire will be a big miss for England this summer after he was ruled out through injury.

“My concern is defensively, even if Harry Maguire was in the squad then I would still have one or two concerns. I think he will be a miss in both boxes for and against set pieces,” Shearer told Betfair.

Shearer also voiced concerns about the left-back position, especially with Maguire’s United teammate Luke Shaw heading to Germany with an injury. Additionally, there are uncertainties about identifying Declan Rice’s ideal midfield partner, although some feel that should be Kobbie Mainoo.

“Luke Shaw isn’t going to be available for the first game or two as well. Defensively, there’s a worry, but going forward and in midfield, they are as good as anywhere,” Shearer continued.

“The one question is, who does he actually play alongside Rice? Does he be brave and put Trent (Alexander-Arnold) in there?

”If you use Iceland as an example and you go in on the front foot, which I hope he does, I hope he goes ‘We’ve got a great chance of winning this tournament. We’re going to go for it; they’re not scared of anyone’, but I also understand that you do need to give that back four a little bit of protection.”
