AC Milan are reportedly in pole position to sign Rasmus Højlund this summer after Manchester United agreed to the terms of his transfer.
Rasmus Højlund’s future at Manchester United is becoming increasingly in doubt after the signing of Benjamin Šeško from RB Leipzig.
Šeško is joining after Højlund failed to establish himself as a reliable goalscorer at Old Trafford, scoring 26 goals in his 95 appearances under Erik ten Hag, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Rúben Amorim.
Højlund has experienced bouts of fantastic form, interspersed with multiple goal droughts. Amorim is now opting to sign a centre-forward who’s the same age but with significantly more senior experience at the top level.
The Danish international signed for United back in 2023 for a £72 million fee, but has failed to live up to that price tag as the club now seek to offload the striker this summer.
United agree to Højlund exit terms
Late last month, Højlund made it clear to journalists on tour that he wanted to stay at Old Trafford for his third season, despite rumours linking him with an exit.
However, reports earlier this week confirmed that United were now pushing for his exit, with the player being valued at around £40 million.
According to Italian journalist Gianluca di Marzio, the club have now also opened the door for Højlund to leave on loan this summer, with whichever club he signs for retaining the right to buy him this summer.
Further, Fabrizio Romano confirmed on his YouTube channel that the conditions of a loan deal United have settled on would be a loan with a hefty loan fee, and the other club covering his entire salary as well as agreeing to an option to buy him in 2026.
Højlund’s likely destination remains Italy
With the 22-year-old’s future hotting up, Gianluca di Marzio has further reported that Højlund’s favoured destination is a return to Italy.
Reports have suggested that AC Milan are in need of a striker, and Di Marzio has explained that the Rossoneri are now in pole position for Højlund after United opened the door to a loan.
However, the Dane is yet to give his approval for the move, which is currently holding up the deal as he wants to remain a United player.
But, it’s thought that with Šeško set to be announced at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, Højlund is reluctantly accepting that his time at the club may be coming to an end.
