Rúben Amorim has revealed all the latest on Manchester United’s injury news as the club prepare to face Lyon in the second leg of the Europa League quarter-finals.
After a bruising 4-1 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday, Rúben Amorim is now focused on leading Manchester United through the Europa League quarter-finals.
United host Olympique Lyonnais at Old Trafford on Thursday evening for the second leg of their tie, with the score level at 2-2 after an eventful first leg in France.
Goals from Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee gave United the lead twice in Lyon, but they were pegged back by Thiago Almada and a dramatic stoppage-time strike from Rayan Cherki.
With the return leg on home turf, United will be looking to make the most of the Old Trafford atmosphere as they aim for a spot in the semi-finals, where either Athletic Bilbao or Rangers await.
That contest is also finely poised following a 0-0 draw in Glasgow, where Rangers held firm despite playing the majority of the match with ten men after Dutch defender Robin Pröpper was sent off early on.
Amorim confirms United injury latest
Speaking to the press on Wednesday afternoon ahead of the second leg, Amorim issued updates on several players.
Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt, and Ayden Heaven were all missing from training on Wednesday morning as the club put on an open training session for fans and the press. Amorim has confirmed that the Dutch striker would be out for the rest of the season with a hamstring injury sustained last weekend.
“Joshua is out for the season, so is not going to play more this season, let’s prepare him for the next,” Amorim said. “Mata [de Ligt] is going to return this season. Ayden [Heaven] will miss this game, he had an issue in training.”
Expanding on De Ligt, the 40-year-old continued: “He is going to return before the end of the season. He has some pain. He finished the game against Nottingham Forest. He is really working hard, he is a tough guy. We hope to have Matthijs in the next weeks.”
Meanwhile, Amad was spotted continuing his invidious rehabilitation following an ankle injury in February, with Amorim saying “Amad is not ready [to return] this month but we want him before the end of the season.”
Jonny Evans was also among those in training, signifying his return after four months. However, the United boss confirmed he would not be ready to be included against Lyon.
What other team news updates are there?
Aside from the above updates, Lisandro Martínez remains out of action until November after suffering an ACL tear against Crystal Palace in February.
André Onana missed out on the loss against Newcastle after his blunders against Lyon with Amorim explaining this was because he wanted the player to “disconnect” from football after intense scrutiny from the media.
However, the player was spotted back in full training with his teammates on Wednesday morning and will return to the squad. Amorim confirmed that the Cameroon international will start on Thursday evening over Altay Bayındır.
“I think as a former coach and a player, I try to do things that can help a player in this situation,” the head coach said. “We talk about managing players physically, but we also have to manage them mentally. This week, my thinking was to put [Andre] Onana to play.”
