“You really feel…” – Mason Mount reveals how Rúben Amorim acts in training with strong “standards” claim

Mason Mount has revealed how Rúben Amorim is behind the scenes and in training, as he also speaks on the “standards” at the club.

Manchester United’s 1-1 draw to West Ham United at Old Trafford has created further uncertainty about Rúben Amorim’s future at the club. The disappointing score draw followed a good win away at Crystal Palace and a shocking 1-0 loss to 10-man Everton.

Before the opening goal, United were struggling to get a grip of the game, despite facing one of the bottom three sides in the Premier League. When Diogo Dalot scored, many thought Amorim’s side would go on to win comfortably, but the rest of the performance was almost the exact opposite.

The goal-scorer was replaced soon after his goal, with what appeared to be a minor injury issue. Less than 10 minutes later, Joshua Zirkzee and Matheus Cunha made way for Mason Mount and Manuel Ugarte.

After West Ham scored to level the game, Amorim chose to bring on Lisandro Martínez, leaving Shea Lacey and Kobbie Mainoo on the bench when United needed a goal.

Mount reveals what Amorim is really like

Amorim has come under much criticism since, but Mount has since come out in defence of the United boss, revealing what he is truly like behind the scenes.

Speaking to club media, Mount said on Amorim: ” He’s great, really good. I think you can see it on the pitch, we always do everything we can for him and work as hard as we can for him. Show passion, fight and desire to win the game.

“He’s exactly like that in training as well, you really feel that passion for the game and as a player, that’s all you want to play for. If you look at the squad now, there’s lots of competition for places.”

He continued to say: “That’s exactly what we need because the standard is always pushing higher and higher. And we need to keep setting those standards high because we want to achieve a lot. I think it’s massively important for us as a group to be competitive, but as soon as we go on the pitch to face the opposition, it’s a given.”

Character or lack of ability?

Mount’s words indicate that the players are behind the manager and willing to put in the work to see him succeed at Old Trafford. But the performances on the pitch tell another story, so what’s the truth?

If the United squad are behind the boss, then it appears that many of them aren’t of the required ability to challenge for the Champions League spots, as the results and performances are still so poor.

The other option is that – as with so many managers since Sir Alex Ferguson – the players have given up on Amorim and aren’t playing to their full ability.

Then there is the worst-case scenario: United’s players aren’t behind the manager and aren’t of the required level to play at Old Trafford.

Whatever the issue is, it must be resolved quickly if Amorim is to keep his job in 2026.
