“You need to…” Diogo Dalot hands advice to Manchester United duo that will ‘benefit the whole club’

Diogo Dalot has handed two Manchester United players a key piece of advice he feels will benefit the whole club going forward under Rúben Amorim.

Rúben Amorim’s early months at Manchester United have been marked by criticism and inconsistent performances following a disappointing run of results.

Though not solely attributable to Amorim, United have already suffered 13 Premier League defeats this season. Having exited both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup earlier in the campaign, the Europa League now remains their sole hope for silverware.

The club have certainly struggled with injuries, losing key players like Amad and Lisandro Martínez for extended periods. Despite these setbacks, several performances have still left supporters baffled and frustrated.

Nevertheless, Amorim has received vocal backing from within his squad, particularly from Diogo Dalot, who has emerged as one of the manager’s strongest supporters during his short tenure at Old Trafford.

Dalot’s advice on keeping fit

During the early years of his career at United, Dalot was hit with a series of injury problems that left him as a firm second choice right back behind Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but in the last two seasons, the Portuguese international has been readily available, playing almost as often as Bruno Fernandes.

Speaking to club media ahead of United’s tie against Olympique Lyonnais in midweek, Dalot explained at length how he has managed to stay fit for such a long period of time despite his early spout of injuries while at Old Trafford.

“Once you start looking at your body as your tool to succeed, I think as soon as you start realising that, it will benefit you the most because you start knowing your body a little bit more,” Dalot explained.

“You know the timings, you know the loads, you know the best ways to recover, the best ways to push even more, so obviously that comes with time.

“You cannot ask an 18-year-old player or a 19-year-old player to know their body because they know, even myself, I’m starting now to understand a little bit, but I think it will take even a couple more years to be in the right spot to understand everything about my body.

“So I’m very curious about ways that I can improve my game on and off the pitch to be ready. Like I said, ultimately, I think that’s what we have to do to benefit the club.”

Asked further if he feels his point of view shows a level of maturity on his part, Dalot replied: “Yeah, it shows, but like I said, you don’t have to be so obsessed as I am becoming now, but it’s a way of trying to get to the best level.

“If you want to be able to play in the way football is going now, which is playing 60-70 games per season, if you’re in a top-level team, you need to start doing things.

“You need to be prepared for that, because you will get really exhausted for the body, and as soon as you start preparing for the amount of games that football now is becoming, I think you will be more prepared.”

Two United players must listen to Dalot’s advice

In recent weeks, United have seen the return of Mason Mount and Luke Shaw to Amorim’s matchday squads, which many feel will help boost the club’s chances of building winning momentum and help push the side through to the end of the season.

However, there have been grave concerns surrounding whether the pair will be able to stay fit following multiple seasons of injury problems that have left them wiped from consideration for the future by many fans.

Recent reports suggest that Amorim still feels Shaw has a future at Old Trafford while the head coach has also made his love for Mount very clear, pointing to the notion that the pair will be able to continue at United if they can prove their fitness.

Mount would be a fantastic addition to the attacking creative line-up, while Shaw has the chance to turn himself into a fantastic left centre-back in Amorim’s back three.

However, both players must heed Dalot’s advice about understanding their respective limits and using their bodies as a tool to succeed by looking after themselves. This will, in turn, benefit the club as a whole by making them more available to the squad.
