Wout Weghorst has admitted that he wants to stay at Manchester United after his six-month loan deal is complete but stresses he has to prove his value before that becomes an option.

The Dutch striker added some much-needed depth to Erik ten Hag’s strikeforce this month after Cristiano Ronaldo departed the club before the World Cup.

Weghorst has started two games since joining the club, and both have been disappointing results for United. The striker, however, has shown promise in these appearances considering he’s only trained with the squad for just over a week.

“I did what I had to do for the team,” said Weghorst of his first two games as a Manchester United player. “Be playable. That went well at times. There were also periods when I could have been more searched for on the ground. I was able to do a lot of work under pressure. But unfortunately, I didn’t get the ball where I prefer to go: around the penalty area. That’s frustrating.”

With the season only just entering the business end, Weghorst is determined to prove his ability to get on the scoresheet, something he has done at all of his clubs barring Burnley.

“In the end, it is very simple. As a striker, you are judged on goals. It is easy. The best plays. I have to force it to make minutes.

“In my career, I have always done one thing: score. We now have two games behind us. If I’m going to miss big opportunities, then I have to worry. But I am convinced that I can do it and that it will be ok.”

The six foot six inches striker is yet to play at the Theatre of Dreams, with matches against Crystal Palace and Arsenal being away from home but he has been happy with his start to life with the club despite the disappointing results so far and wants to remain at the club following his loan deal.

“It’s fantastic to be here,” he added. “The atmosphere, the away fans, the game that waves up and down. Beautiful. I’ve been here for over a week now. It’s going well.

“Of course [I want to stay at Manchester United], but first I have to make sure that I can be of value to the team and this club.”
