Altay Bayındır could be called upon to start Manchester United’s clash against Newcastle on the weekend as Ruben Amorim considers dropping André Onana.
Manchester United are still searching for their first win since returning from the latest international break, with a challenging away fixture against Newcastle on the horizon.
Despite the winless run, the Reds may feel somewhat unlucky with recent results. Strong performances against Nottingham Forest and Manchester City were undone by a lack of cutting edge in front of goal.
In their Europa League clash with Lyon, it was André Onana’s errors that proved costly, with the goalkeeper at fault for both goals in a 2-2 draw that saw United surrender their lead ahead of the second leg.
That game has led to calls for Onana to be dropped from the team to face the Magpies on the weekend and reports have suggested that Ruben Amorim is considering that move.
What Bayındır said about United situation amid potential Onana dropping
Altay Bayındır would be the man to come in for the Cameroon international after recently returning from an injury setback.
The Turkish international has made six appearances this season – trebling the amount during his first campaign at the club – and four of those games have came under Amorim.
It is still a small amount of game-time. Some might argue that he would have played more recently if he didn’t suffer that injury due to Onana’s form.
Nevertheless, the 26-year-old has a clear stance if he is chosen to come in for the first-choice in the coming weeks.
Bayındır has previously explained that no matter the amount of game-time, he needs to be ready for the eventual moment he is called upon to start matches.
“If you are not playing it doesn’t matter,” Bayindir told the BBC after his performance vs Arsenal in the FA Cup earlier this season.
“You have to be ready every minute, every second. If you are a Manchester United player you have to be ready always.
“I am working every day. I am patient. I just want to help this great team. I want to make everyone happy for this great club.”
Bayındır can stake a claim for United starting spot
Being a backup goalkeeper is a difficult task. Many footballers thrive off of getting consistent game-time and rhythm on the pitch. That is almost impossible for them.
They can have great performances on the pitch but are usually brought back out for the first-choice. That might not be the case this time around, however.
Onana’s disgraceful display against Lyon has tipped many over the edge after his disappointing form this term. If he starts against Newcastle, Bayındır could stake a claim for the starting spot for the rest of the season.
So far in his United career, he has shown flashes of quality mixed with mistakes. If he can produce some impressive performances, he could end up starting the majority of games before the season ends.
