According to reports, Willy Kambwala decided to leave Manchester United this summer following talks with Erik ten Hag at Carrington.

In a surprising turn of events, Manchester United are set to sell Willy Kambwala this summer as INEOS aim to raise as much capital as possible for new signings.

Erik ten Hag is looking to bring in multiple centre-backs, with the club working on deals for Leny YoroMatthijs de Ligt, and Jarrad Branthwaite. Space must be made to accommodate these incoming players.

The announcement that the 19-year-old academy graduate would be leaving the club for Villarreal CF caught many off guard following his debut season with the club.

What Ten Hag said

However, subsequent reports have now revealed that Kambwala decided to reject a fresh contract from the club after holding a meeting with Ten Hag when the players returned to first-team pre-season training on Monday.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Although Kambwala was originally reluctant to leave the club, he spoke with Ten Hag and was informed that he would be well down in the pecking order.

With United’s arsenal of Lisandro Martínez, Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans, and Victor Lindelöf to choose from, plus the seemingly incoming signing of Matthijs de Ligt, there is little space for Kambwala to play.

Further to this, the club are also thought to be pursuing Leny Yoro and Jarrad Branthwaite, meaning that Kambwala could become surplus to requirements, and at 19 years old, he needs to establish himself for the sake of his career.
