Manchester United were said to be close to signing Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat for Erik ten Hag, but the transfer has gone quiet in the last week.

Manchester United need adding quality depth to their midfield, as was on display during the 1-0 win over Wolves on Monday evening for Erik ten Hag‘s squad.

With Fred having exited Old Trafford for Fenerbahce on the weekend just past, many expected that United would therefore step up their pursuit of Sofyan Amrabat… but they are yet to do so.

United are lacking in depth to add competition to Casemiro’s role in the side, and it is no secret that Ten Hag admires Amrabat after they worked together at FC Utrecht, but United haven’t sanctioned enough sales to make a move.

It was previously reported that United not only need to sell Fred to target Amrabat but also must secure the sale of Donny van de Beek before any move can be made for the Moroccan.

Van de Beek’s future was thought to be at Real Sociedad after the club opened negotiations with both the player and Manchester United to broker a deal, but they have since pulled out of the talks, leaving Van de Beek at the club.

It was mentioned on Sunday that the Dutchman’s former club, Ajax, are weighing up making a move for the player, but there are yet to be any significant developments in this area.

In essence, United’s move for Amrabat is being held up by the fact that there are yet to be any takers for Donny van de Beek’s signature permanently, which is essential before the club can consider making a bit for the Fiorentina player.
