Manchester United are set to wear a unique home kit as Rúben Amorim prepares his squad to face Tottenham in the Europa League final on Wednesday evening.
Manchester United have their eyes on the Europa League final, where they’ll take on Tottenham in Bilbao on Wednesday night.
Despite a dismal run in the Premier League—eight games without a win—Rúben Amorim’s men have shone on the European stage.
They finished third in the league phase and progressed past Real Sociedad in the round of 16 with a 5-2 aggregate win, thanks in large part to a second-leg hat-trick from Bruno Fernandes.
The quarter-finals delivered chaos: after a 2-2 draw in France, United’s second leg at Old Trafford saw them go 2-0 up, fall 4-2 behind, and then mount a stunning comeback with goals from Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, and Harry Maguire in just seven minutes.
In the semi-finals, United were ruthless—beating Athletic Club 3-0 away and 4-1 at home to book their place in the final, where Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs await.
Why United are wearing a unique kit vs Tottenham
With United’s home kit their famous red while Spurs will play in white, it has been confirmed that both teams will wear their respective home kits for the Europa League final.
However, in a club statement, United confirmed that the club will wear its red kit with a combination of black socks and black shorts, likely due to the light colours of Tottenham’s kit. The club has not worn this strip since drawing 1-1 against Real Sociedad at the beginning of March.
Often this season, United have opted to wear a combination of either white shorts with black socks or black shorts with white socks, making the double-black combination a more unique pairing. This is also the same combination of colours United wore during the 2021 Europa League final loss against Villarreal.
Beyond this, the club are also expected to have an engraving stitched in the middle of their shirts marking the occasion with the date, competition name, and opponent, as is customary for all finals.
United have also confirmed that the shot-stopper for the game, expected to be André Onana, will be wearing the club’s green goalkeeper kit. Tottenham are yet to confirm what version of their home kit they will wear.
The consequences of the Europa League final are huge for United
There is no understating just how much rides on this Europa League final, with a trophy, Champions League qualification, and around £85 million in revenue lying in wait for the winning team.
With both United and Tottenham having undergone horrific league campaigns, sitting 16th and 17th in the table respectively, it is the only possible route to the Champions League, and whoever ends up on the losing side will have an extremely tough summer.
After both sides spent big money in the last few windows, the £85 million in extra revenue would allow whoever won the trophy to spend and make marked improvements to their squads in the summer window, while the opponent would be left stuck and without European football next season.
For Amorim, this could be the difference between bringing in two or three major signings or being able to sign five or six more first-team players, with the transfers of players like Liam Delap potentially affecting Champions League qualification next season.
