Manchester United look set to leapfrog Arsenal in the race for Benjamin Sesko this summer with Rúben Amorim looking for striker reinforcements.
Manchester United continue to grapple with a lack of consistent firepower up front — an issue that has plagued them in recent seasons.
Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes have been the only dependable sources of goals, with Rashford bagging 30 during the 2022/23 campaign. But with Rashford expected to move on following his loan at Aston Villa, and Fernandes now operating in a deeper midfield role under Rúben Amorim, serious concerns remain over the effectiveness of United’s attack.
Rasmus Højlund has shown promise, but at this stage of his development, he may not be ready to shoulder the responsibility of leading the line alone. Joshua Zirkzee, meanwhile, appears more comfortable playing off a central striker than being one himself.
With the summer transfer window on the horizon, United are actively searching for reinforcements — and reports suggest both Liam Delap and Victor Osimhen are high on their shortlist.
United to leap-frog Arsenal in Sesko race
Despite reports suggesting that Delap is the club’s priority striker target this summer due to his affordability compared to other options, they have also been linked with RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko.
It is well known that the club had Sesko on their list of attacking options last summer before he committed his future to the Bundesilga outfit, but it seems as if he is now back on the market this summer.
According to transfer expert David Ornstein, United rate the 21-year-old “highly”, although it would not be a cheap transfer due to his contract not expiring until 2029 and his clear potential as a centre-forward.
However, Ornstein also hands United a boost in their pursuit of the Slovenian international as he explained that Arsenal, who have been continually linked with the player for years, have “some reservations” about his signing this summer.
It is suggested that Mikel Arteta and Arsenal’s new sporting director Andrea Berta may instead be prioritising other options, such as Alexander Isak or Viktor Gyökeres, allowing United to leap-frog them in the race for Sesko.
Højlund may be involved in Sesko deal
This news comes after reports last month claimed that Sesko’s current side may be eyeing a move for United striker Højlund this summer.
Højlund is rapidly falling out of favour at Old Trafford having scored just eight goals in 42 appearances this season, and according to TBR Football, Leipzig see the 22-year-old as a potential replacement for Sesko.
Bayer Leverkusen and Mainz are also thought to be eyeing the Danish goalscorer, who could join his two brothers in Germany.
Højlund’s twin brothers, Oscar and Emil, both play in the German Bundesliga for Eintracht Frankfurt and Schalke, respectively.
