Who is Franco Mastantuono? Man Utd among clubs considering £38m transfer for Argentina wonderkid

Manchester United are reportedly among the club interested in signing Argentina wonderkid Franco Mastantuono in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Manchester United’s club chiefs are looking ahead to a crucial summer transfer window to try and bolster Ruben Amorim’s squad.

There have been significant difficulties at Old Trafford this season and there needs to be some important signings to improve the quality at Amorim’s disposal.

Developments are being made with Matheus Cunha after United spoke to his representatives in the last week, and the Reds are also eyeing Liam Delap as a striker signing.

Both of those players are Premier League-proven and will be immediate upgrades on the current options within the club but United are also eyeing other kind of options.

The likes of Chido Obi, Ayden Heaven and Sekou Kone are examples of young and unproven players the club have signed in the last year, with the aim for them all to grow into first-team regulars.

United considering move for Mastantuono

United are already eyeing other young talents across the world and Franco Mastantuono is one of the latest to be linked with a move to Old Trafford.

According to a fresh report from The Sun, the Reds are closely monitoring the 17-year-old starlet and are among a group of clubs interested in signing him this summer. This has since been repeated by Sky Sports.

It was explained that Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan are also eyeing the Argentina wonderkid, who has a £38 million release clause in his contract at River Plate.

Mastantuono is a right-sided forward and would likely operate in the frontline for Amorim if the club decided to make a move for him.

Who is Mastantuono?

Unless you are an avid Football Manager player, Mastantuono’s name might be new to you but the River Plate starlet has been shining for them since his debut.

The 17-year-old become the youngest scorer in the Argentinian club’s history when he netted in a win over Excursionistas last February and he has continued to impress this term.

In just 11 appearances, Mastantuono has three goals and two assists playing predominantly from the right-wing, although he is versatile, and has drawn comparisons to Phil Foden due to his playstyle.

The left-footed winger has made 10 appearances for Argentina’s U20s side and will be pushing for senior involvement ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Despite his young age, Mastantuono is already an important player for River and has been trusted to play in some of their most difficult fixtures.

Argentinian football expert x described the teenager’s playstyle, saying: “He’s a small offensive midfielder as many Argentinians are. He’s very talented, he’s left-footed, and he’s very good at playing between the lines. He creates a lot of trouble because he’s small and hard to get. He’s very creative and has good shots and good passing skills.”

It remains to be seen whether United fans will have to learn even more about Mastantuono ahead of next season.
