Ruben Amorim was in attendance for Manchester United’s U21s convincing 5-1 victory over Southampton’s youth side on Saturday afternoon.

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim took charge at Old Trafford last month and has since managed six games.

With three wins, two defeats and one draw, it has been a mixed start to life at the club for the new head coach.

But he is learning a lot about his first-team squad and is also eager to assess the youth talent within the Academy at Carrington.

Godwill Kukonki was the first young star to be included in Amorim’s first-team squad. The 16-year-old defender appeared on the bench for the visit to Arsenal.

However, due to an almost fully fit squad, Amorim has not been including many of the Academy stars in his recent training sessions.

The 39-year-old still made time to watch the Under-21s play against Southampton at Carrington on Saturday afternoon.

He was stood on the sidelines alongside technical director Jason Wilcox, first-team coach Darren Fletcher and head of academy Nick Cox.

United’s youth side produced a dominant display, winning 5-1 against the Saints to move fifth in the Premier League 2 table.

Tyler Fletcher opened the scoring for the young Reds before Dan Gore’s strike put them two goals to the good going into the break.

A brace from midfield talent Jack Moorhouse and a further goal from Ethan Wheatley helped secure a comfortable victory for Travis Binnion’s side despite Baylee Dipepa’s consolation goal for the visitors.

There were many impressive performances within the United side, but Manchester Evening News detail that it was Moorhouse who ‘ caught the eye most of all’ as Amorim watched on.

The 19-year-old midfielder’s development has been interrupted with constant injury issues in recent years but he is beginning to make an impact in the Under-21s.

His performance on Saturday was described as ‘energetic’ and he produced a moment of pure quality to score his second goal of the day.

After driving up the pitch with the ball and playing it out wide, Moorhouse received the ball in the box, where he danced past multiple Saints defenders before poking the ball into the far right corner.

With Amorim watching the game closely, Moorhouse would have certainly caught his eye and he may be rewarded with some action in first-team training soon.
