Rasmus Højlund is currently injured but hoping to make his return to Manchester United soon as Erik ten Hag’s “hope” for his striker is revealed.

Rasmus Højlund suffered a hamstring injury in pre-season against Arsenal, the same game in which Leny Yoro injured his foot.

Initial reports suggested a six-week outlay for the United striker, who was seen returning to individual training at Carrington last week.

Last season, players often took longer than anticipated to return to the team in what was considered an injury-ridden season for Erik ten Hag’s squad.

A new report from MailSport has detailed that Højlund has been “working around the clock” to get himself back into shape for selection.

It was explained that the 21-year-old has remained in high spirits despite the injury setback and has been working away from the first-team squad with conditioning coach Mike Clegg and first-team physiotherapist David Binningsley.

The report added that Clegg is a popular figure with the playing squad and that he, alongside Binningsley, is pushing Højlund to make his return as soon as possible.

Højlund scored 16 goals during his first season at Old Trafford last term but also had a few injury troubles throughout that campaign.

With that experience under his belt, however, many are expecting him to push on this season for United, who are misfiring in front of goal in his absence.

Only five Premier League clubs – Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea – have created more ‘big chances’ than United in the opening three games of the season.

However, the Reds have scored just two goals, a total matched by Crystal Palace, Everton, and Ipswich Town. Southampton (1) is the only club to have netted less.

For that reason, Højlund’s return is much anticipated, and the aforementioned report added that Ten Hag hopes that he will be able to select the striker for the visit to Southampton after the international break.

While the Dutch manager is unlikely to throw Højlund into the starting lineup after several weeks out of action, he could be a useful option off the bench.
