Manchester United’s talks with Brentford regarding the transfer of Bryan Mbeumo are becoming increasingly frustrated due to a perceived lack of progress.
Manchester United are continuing talks over what would be their third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon, with a deal for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo edging closer to completion.
Rúben Amorim is keen to add further attacking options after bringing in Cunha, but negotiations with Brentford for Mbeumo have been slow to progress.
An opening £55 million bid for the 25-year-old was rejected in early June, and a second offer — matching that fee with an additional £7.5 million in add-ons — was also turned down.
Despite the delays, there is growing confidence that an agreement will be reached. Once Mbeumo completes his move to Old Trafford, United are expected to ramp up player departures and continue targeting a striker and midfielder ahead of the Premier League’s mid-August kick-off.
United hopeful of signing Mbeumo soon
Negotiations between United and Brentford for the Cameroon international have been ongoing for around a month, with the player himself growing increasingly frustrated at the slow progress. Brentford have told Mbeumo not to return for the first week of their pre-season.
In a fresh update, Sky Sports‘ Dharmesh Sheth has provided the latest on the transfer, explaining that United remain positive that they will eventually secure the player and hope he will join before the team flies to the United States for their pre-season ties.
Amorim’s first pre-season game with the squad is a clash with Leeds United in Sweden on 19 July, and they will fly straight from Stockholm to the US, where they will face West Ham, Bournemouth, and Everton between 26 July and 3 August.
“Manchester United remain optimistic of agreeing a deal to sign Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo,” Sheth explained on Wednesday afternoon.
“However, discussions are continuing at Old Trafford over what their next steps are. United are not far away from the overall figure Brentford want for Mbeumo, believed to be £65 million.
“There is still work to do on the structure of the deal, though, as Brentford want the majority – if not all – of the £65m to be paid up front.
“United remain hopeful a deal can be done in time for the Cameroon international to be part of their preseason tour of the United States.”
Furthermore, Sheth confirmed that an agreement has already been reached between United and Mbeumo’s representatives over his contract.
“The player himself has made it clear he only wants to move to United, and personal terms are believed to have been agreed in principle between the parties.”
How much is Mbeumo set to earn at United?
Earlier this summer, reports had surfaced that United had offered Mbeumo a contract worth around £250,000 per week, but this was soon dispelled.
However, later reports confirmed that Mbeumo and Cunha were both on contracts lower than this, with each player on a deal worth an initial £150,000 per week plus bonuses.
If United are to qualify for the Champions League at the end of the 2025/26 campaign, this salary would then rise closer to £200,000 a week.
With the club looking to rid Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford of their contracts worth over £300,000 per week each, the club are keen to reduce their wage bill.
