When is Manchester United vs Lyon? Dates, Old Trafford leg, Europa League semi-final opponent details
Everything you need to know as Manchester United prepare to face Olympique Lyonnais in the Europa League quarter-finals after a 5-2 aggregate win over Real Sociedad.
Manchester United have advanced to the Europa League quarter-finals after a 5-2 win over La Liga side Real Sociedad across a two-legged knockout tie.
The first leg took place in San Sebastian, with Joshua Zikzee’s second-half goal equalled by a penalty from Mikel Oyarzabal, leaving the fixture finely poised at 1-1 ahead of the second leg.
The return fixture saw Oyarzabal net another penalty just minutes into the game, but a further two penalties scored by Bruno Fernandes before a free-flowing third secured his hat-trick and thumping effort from Diogo Dalot saw Rúben Amorim’s men win 4-1 on the night.
Next, United will face Olympique Lyonnais in the quarter-finals, who defeated Romanian sie FCSB 7-1 across two legs.
When is the Lyon fixture?
United will have almost a month to prepare for the tie against the Ligue 1 side. The first leg will take place on Thursday, 10 April.
Then, the return leg will happen one week later, with United and Lyon playing out what will no doubt be a tense affair on Thursday, 17 April.
Which leg will be at Old Trafford?
Thankfully for United, the first leg of the fixture will take place in Lyon, France, meaning they will be able to welcome the French team to Old Trafford for the second leg.
Across football, it is generally accepted that it’s better to have the opening leg away from home and the second leg at your team’s home ground, as any deficit that may be lost while playing away can be made up.
Also, should the fixture head into extra time after being level across the two 90 minute games, United’s Old Trafford crowd will be willing them on.
Who could United face in the semi-finals?
United’s road to Bilbao, where the Europa League final will be held, has already been mapped out as part of the new format of the competition.
Although semi-final opponents are yet to be confirmed as the quarter-final fixtures are yet to be played, United will face one of Rangers of Athletic Bilbao should the progress to the semi-finals.
Bilbao booked their place in the quarter-finals after defeating Roma 4-3 on aggregate, while Rangers had to win on penalties against Fenerbahce after a 3-3 draw across two legs.
