What Wolves told Rob Edwards about Joao Gomes’ January Man Utd transfer as ‘wants to leave’ claim made

Joao Gomes is another name that has been added to Manchester United’s midfield recruitment radar, but his current club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, have set the record straight.

Joao Gomes is a bright Brazilian midfielder and has been one of Wolves’ standout players since he arrived in 2023. Rightfully so, he is now gaining interest from a host of top clubs.

With Wolves’ Premier League position precarious, he may also provide a cheaper alternative to the likes of Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba.

The tenacious traits that he possesses have caught the eye of those who look to add a midfielder to their blossoming squad next year, such as Manchester United. His age is also an attractive attribute for Rúben Amorim, meaning he aligns with the club’s new transfer policy.

Gomes’ former teammate and fellow compatriot Matheus Cunha could help aid the move should speculation continue to swirl.

Wolves stuck between a rock and a hard place with Gomes’ future

According to UnitedInFocus, the ‘people’ around Gomes want to leave the Black Country club as soon as possible in January, amid United’s interest and their poor form.

With all the unrest at Wolves currently, this will not help matters; in fact, it will only add fuel to what feels like an unrelenting fire.  But Wolves’ response was a robust one.

UnitedInFocus further claims that the club has told new manager Rob Edwards that no key players are for sale in the upcoming January transfer window, as they attempt to give their new boss the best chance of success.

It should be said that Edwards swapped a promotion push with Middlesbrough for a relegation rumble with Wolves, the club he played for between 2004 and 2008, and managed on an interim basis in 2016.

The stubborn strategy of Wolves may backfire, though, as keeping a player who does not want to be there could be damaging to an already brittle dressing room.

United’s pull could persuade Gomes

For a while, United has been a graveyard for transfers – but not anymore. The Premier League-proven signings of Cunha and Mbeumo have been an instant hit, and Gomes could follow in their footsteps.

With confidence returning and momentum building, United finally look like a side with direction and purpose.

Adding a player of Gomes’ quality would only strengthen that sense of belief – a signal that the club’s new era of smart, ambitious recruitment is well underway.

The upward trajectory that United are on is an exciting prospect. Having the chance to be part of a squad that could restore the Reds to their former glory is something no player could resist.
