England manager Thomas Tuchel has given a fresh verdict on Mason Mount’s international career after an impressive spell for Manchester United.
When Rúben Amorim first joined Manchester United, he famously said: “I love that kid,” when referring to Mason Mount. However, the former Chelsea man hasn’t had the easiest time since his switch to Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag.
Mount was immediately handed the illustrious No.7 shirt and impressed during pre-season, alongside Hannibal Mejbri and other youngsters, but he made just 14 Premier League appearances in his first campaign and only 17 last season.
This season, Mount has started in fine form and he appears to have put the majority of his injury issues behind in. The England international has already made seven appearances in the league, and likely would’ve started against Brighton and Hove Albion if it hadn’t been for a mid-week knock.
Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 gets the best out of Mount, much like Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea system did. The new England manager is a known fan of Mount, but hasn’t picked him for the national side just yet. However, a fresh verdict has now been made.
What Tuchel thinks of Mount
If Mount can prove his fitness soon, he could be in line for an England call-up, with the next international break just after United’s match against Tottenham Hotspur in the second week of November.
Speaking to United in Focus, transfer journalist Graeme Bailey has now revealed exactly what Tuchel thinks of Mount, after a run of “perfect” performances for Amorim’s side.
Bailey said: “I am told Tuchel has been keeping a close eye on Mason Mount’s return to fitness and form. He really likes him as a player, and it is no surprise to learn that he is considering bringing him in.
“He will want to have a look at Mount to check on him, Tuchel is clearly already thinking about who is going to be on that plane for the USA next summer, and any player wanting to go doesn’t have too much time to make an impression.”
Mount could force Mainoo decision
During the African Cup of Nations, Mount is almost certain to start more games, alongside Matheus Cunha or Bruno Fernandes in the front three. However, United will be back to playing mid-week fixtures during this time, so Mount will have to prove his fitness.

If Mount can become a starter while United play midweek football, Mainoo could still be stuck on the bench, as Fernandes wouldn’t have to move into attacking midfield. Therefore, he could again decide to look for a move away from Old Trafford to play regular football.
However, if Mount can’t be relied upon to play twice a week, Mainoo will pick up more starts and could force his way into the regular starting lineup when AFCON ends.
Mount could have a huge impact on Mainoo’s United future.
