Matheus Cunha missed out on Manchester United’s derby day defeat to rivals Manchester City after suffering an injury before the international break.
Manchester United have had a difficult start to the season, with just one win in their opening fives games across all competitions.
That victory came over Burnley and during the game Ruben Amorim’s team suffered a setback as Matheus Cunha was forced off the pitch with a hamstring injury.
The Brazilian forward had been one of United’s most impressive players beforehand following on from his summer move to Old Trafford.
Despite suggestions that he may be fit for the visit to the Etihad Stadium, Cunha was not ruled to be fit enough to play and missed out as United lost the game 3-0.
What Cunha has told friends about United return
United’s attention is now on their next game against Chelsea at Old Trafford and it feels like a win is needed for the Reds after their poor start to the season.
It would be a huge boost if Amorim was to have Cunha back for the clash with Enzo Maresca’s side this weekend, and that may be the case.
Ben Jacobs explained on the United Stand that United’s no.10 has told people that he will be ready for the Chelsea game, although the final decision does rest with Amorim.
“Cunha has been working with a personal trainer and he’s been telling people he’ll be ready for the Chelsea game… Let’s see if Ruben Amorim agrees,” said Jacobs.
It may be considered a risk to throw the Brazilian back into the team in case another injury occurs. But Amorim will surely be considering the decision due to the poor form the team find themselves in.
Cunha is needed to turn around struggling United form
Against City, United were poor and didn’t deserve anything from the game, but Bryan Mbeumo still pushed and pushed. The Cameroonian was United’s best player.
His constant attacking runs and intent in his play showed the kind of player you want at Old Trafford, and Cunha offers those traits as well.
With some of the team perhaps lacking confidence, you need players like Cunha, Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes to drag the team forwards in difficult fixtures.
While it may be considered a risk, if Cunha is fit to play against Chelsea he should be starting the game.
