Jason Wilcox and Ruben Amorim have worked closely at Manchester United but there appears to be tension between the two at the moment.
Manchester United made the trip to Elland Road for a Sunday afternoon Premier League showdown against long-standing rivals Leeds United and the points were eventually shared.
The high-profile encounter began at an intense pace, with United matching Leeds’ aggression and holding firm during the opening 20 minutes. Chances fell to Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Matheus Cunha, but neither side managed to break the deadlock.
After the interval, the pattern of the game remained largely unchanged until Leeds eventually struck through Brenden Aaronson. However, their lead was short-lived, as Cunha responded almost immediately to bring United level with 25 minutes remaining.
Both teams pushed for a decisive goal late on, but a lack of sharpness in the final third meant neither could find a winner, and the points were shared in an evenly contested clash on Sunday afternoon.
Amorim makes dig towards Wilcox
Following on from the draw at Elland Road, Amorim spoke to the media in his press conference and once again provided some interesting quotes.
The United head coach suggested that he wants to be considered the manager at Old Trafford before hinting that Jason Wilcox should focus on his job at the director of football.
“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach,” Amorim said. “Every department, the scouting department, the sports director, needs to do their job. I will do my mine for 18 months and then we move on.”
Amorim has 18 months remaining on his current contract at United. He has previously seemed to have a good working relationship with Wilcox, who spends a lot of time at Carrington, but this suggests there is some tension.
What Wilcox has told Amorim
After those quotes emerged, a report from talkSPORT has claimed that there is ‘growing tension’ between Amorim and Wilcox.
It was explained that Wilcox has expressed to Amorim that he would like him to be more tactically adaptable. Many fans have complained about the Portuguese’s 3-4-3 formation.
The report added that Amorim has been told that January signings are unlikely despite having a depleted squad due to AFCON and injuries.
Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount could return to the side against Burnley on Wednesday night, while there has not been any updates on Kobbie Mainoo.
