What caused Leny Yoro’s injury revealed as Man United ‘take positive’ from three-month layoff
Manchester United suffered an unfortunate setback when new signing Leny Yoro suffered a three-month injury against Arsenal in pre-season.
Yoro, 18, was making only his second appearance for the club after his £52 million move from Lille when he was forced off the pitch early due to a foot injury.
It was hoped that the move was precautionary but United soon learnt that the young Frenchman would be out of action until November.
A move for Matthijs de Ligt has since been made, with Bayern Munich rejecting a double-bid for the centre-back and Noussair Mazraoui. United are expected to go back in for both players.
When Yoro suffered his setback, it was unknown whether it was an off-ball incident or during a tussle. There was much made about the state of the SoFi Stadium pitch and whether it had a part to play.
The Telegraph have explained that the United believe the injury was caused during an innocuous tangle with Arsenal striker Gabriel Jesus when he was holding him off the ball.
It was added that there were no concerns from the players or United’s management about the pitch.
The lengthy layoff is certainly not ideal for the player or club. It would’ve been likely that Yoro partnered Lisandro Martínez at the start of the Premier League campaign.
However, the aforementioned report explained that while United are bitterly disappointed about the injury, they are also trying to take some positives from the situation.
In particular, staff believe the layoff will at least afford their new signing extra time to adjust to life at the club and familiarise himself with his new surroundings in Manchester.
While no one is under the illusion that the circumstances are ideal, the report concluded that the hope within Old Trafford is that the teenager will have time to get his feet under the table and then hit the ground running when he returns in November.
Until then, Erik ten Hag will need to find an alternative option in the backline to start the season. Whether that comes from the existing players or new signings remains to be seen.
