Manchester United icon Wes Brown believes that one exciting star had been overlooked in recent years before some shock developments this summer.
Manchester United are close to finalising their second signing of the summer, with a move for Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo nearing completion.
Following the earlier acquisition of Matheus Cunha, Ruben Amorim remains intent on bolstering his attacking options. Although negotiations for Mbeumo have been challenging, significant progress has been made in recent days.
United’s initial £55 million offer for the 25-year-old was rejected in early June, and an improved offer of £62.5 million is now close to Brentford’s valuation.
Discussions are ongoing regarding performance-related add-ons that could bring the total value of the deal to approximately £65 million.
Mbeumo, who netted 20 Premier League goals last season and has scored 82 times in his career to date, is expected to provide a major boost to Amorim’s misfiring frontline.
Brown says 82-goal star “has been overlooked” until United developments
Ex-United defender Wes Brown is really excited to see Mbeumo at Old Trafford and believes it would be a top signing for his former club.
He also suggested that Mbeumo’s abilities have been overlooked until his shock links to United emerged earlier this summer.
“I think Mbeumo would be a top signing, and I think he has been overlooked until this summer,” Brown told Manchester World.
“He has had a great few years in the Premier League and, similar to Cunha, he is Premier League proven, which is what United need.
“They need players to come in and hit the ground running, perform straight away and get the fans back on side. He knows exactly what his game is, and he is brilliant at executing it.
“I think he would be an amazing signing and a real boost to the squad. I would be really optimistic about next season if they get this one over the line in time for a strong pre-season.”
Mbeumo’s time in Premier League is crucial
The benefit of playing for someone like Brentford is that you get the much-needed experience of operating at the highest level in the Premier League without the pressure of a club like United.
Both Mbeumo and Cunha are coming from clubs where they’ve been allowed to settle and find their find in a difficult environment, which will help them be ready for the challenge at Old Trafford.

Premier League-proven has been mentioned many times in recent weeks but it does play a significant factor and could end up helping United a lot going forward.
It remains to be seen whether United might look within England’s top flight for any of their other signings this summer.
