Wes Brown criticises “brilliant signing” for Sunderland performance despite manager’s claim

Wes Brown has criticised one of Manchester United’s new summer signings after his performance against Sunderland, despite a claim from Regis Le Bris.

Manchester United looked impressive against Sunderland. Rúben Amorim’s side didn’t play their best football, but they looked significantly better than the week before against Brentford.

Mason Mount – who returned to the starting lineup in place of Matheus Cunha – opened the scoring with a composed two-touch finish after a cross from Bryan Mbeumo. The former Chelsea man found himself with time and space on the edge of the box and finished well.

The second and final goal came from Benjamin Šeško. United’s new No.30 scored a poacher’s goal after a long throw from Diogo Dalot before treating Old Trafford to his signature leap for the very first time.

Despite the 2-0 win – with a clean sheet for Senne Lammens on his debut – United can still make improvements under Amorim. The Red Devils manager will be looking to build on the positive momentum throughout the international break before a trip to Anfield.

Brown criticises Mbeumo for Sunderland performance

While Mbeumo registered an assist against Sunderland, it wasn’t his best performance in a United shirt, although Regis Le Bris noted him as a key reason in his side’s loss on Saturday afternoon.

Wes Brown – speaking on MUTV – spoke about Mbeumo’s performance and start to the season: “Listen, I think you’re going to see him in that position [the box] quite a lot this season.

“He knows he needs to do better there. You see him get on that left foot, with that much space, and he normally just curls that one in the bottom or top corner. But he was slightly off balance and it wasn’t quite meant to be.

“I still don’t think he’s at his best and he caused a lot of problems today without maybe the end product, but still the assist was still there. The end product is a little bit off but, again, he’s a brilliant signing for us and exactly what we needed.”

Mbeumo joined United for over £70 million after a long transfer saga this summer, as one of the new attacking midfielders, along with Cunha.

Mbeumo and Šeško will form solid partnership

Against Sunderland, Mbeumo played much closer to Šeško, with Mount dropping deeper to support the midfield, with and without the ball. This allowed the two new additions to combine more and showcase their link play.

Lammens also looked for Šeško with many of his passes. The Slovenian often wins the header, looking to flick it on for Mbeumo, like he did against Chelsea for Sanchez’s red card.

While it isn’t perfect yet, Mbeumo and Šeško have already shown that they could create serious problems for opposition defences, especially if Šeško continues to be so dominant in the air.

Amorim needs to focus on this partnership, as it could cause every Premier League side problems, not just a newly promoted team.
