“We have to win for them…” – Amad reveals the inspiration that helps the Manchester United squad

Manchester United’s fans appear to be the difference maker, as Amad reveals the inspiration that pushes the Manchester United squad forward.

Manchester United’s improved run of form under Michael Carrick has come as a shock to much of the fanbase, even with some positive results towards the end of Rúben Amorim’s tenure.

Carrick remains unbeaten in either of his stints as United head coach, but he is not expected to be considered for the permanent job at the end of the season.

The most recent result – a 1-1 draw with West Ham United – will be a disappointment for Carrick and the squad, but Benjamin Šeško’s late equaliser ensures the mood isn’t too down during United’s break before Everton.

The late winner also proves the squad’s newfound ‘never say die’ attitude with Carrick at the helm. That is typical of United’s DNA, but it has been lacking for the last few years, although it was seen at times under Amorim.

Bruno Fernandes’ request appears to be the main inspiration for United’s current squad, especially when at Old Trafford.

Fernandes changes inspires squad

Last season, Fernandes requested a change in the pre-match music for fans at Old Trafford. ‘This is the One’ had been the walk-out song since Gary Neville’s request, but Fernandes changed from the classic to ‘Country Roads’ by John Denver.

“Everyone in the stadium feels that song very much and it’s a song that resembles the United history as well. It was little mix of things that we thought might be a good thing to try,” said Fernandes in April 2025.

Now, Amad has spoken on the impact of the song before games. He told United’s media team: “I love the song at Old Trafford where everyone sings together too: ‘Take me home, United Road, to the place I belong, to Old Trafford, to see United, take me home United Road…’ Every time when they put that song on, I sing it in my head.

“Even in the dressing room we play that song sometimes before we go to the pitch, to remember: wow, we are playing for Manchester United. It gives us energy.

“You see the fans singing the song and you think: today is the day, we have to win for them. Then when you start playing you are so relaxed, because [you know] the fans are there to help you.”

Take me home to Old Trafford

Old Trafford hasn’t always been a fortress for United, especially since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure in 2013. But that trend appears to be changing.

This season, United have played 13 Premier League matches at home and a further 13 away from home. In their Old Trafford matches, United have lost just two games and picked up 27 points. Whereas on their travels, they have just 18 points and just four wins.

Furthermore, Carrick’s United have overseen 2-0 wins against Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur at home, while the only draw of Carrick’s tenure has come away from home.

While the song won’t be the main reason behind the impressive home form, there’s no doubt it plays a part.
