Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has stated that the club have no choice but to finish in the Premier League’s top four this season.

Talking to Sky Sports, Shaw was asked what the club’s ambitions were at this stage of the season.

The Manchester United defender would explain that whilst ambitions change as the season goes on, the squad have two clear goals for the remainder of this season.

Having faced setbacks in the Premier League, Carabao Cup, and in Europe, Shaw said that the club’s ambitions at this stage of the season were to qualify for the Champions League and to win the FA Cup.

“At the start of the season it wouldn’t be our only ambitions,” Shaw stated. “At the start of the season we want to win the Premier League, the Champions League, we want to win everything.

“I think at this point right now we have to be a bit more realistic on the position we are at. For us now, a club like this has to be in the Champions League.

“We’re in the FA Cup at the moment, and I think we have to be realistic and look at what we can achieve this season, I think these two competitions should be our aim.”

Pressed further, Shaw would admit that it was vital that the squad use their setbacks as motivation to go on and win the FA Cup this season.

“These are things that need to motivate you. We were close last season [to winning the FA Cup], and we won the Carabao Cup.

“But the FA Cup, we, of course, lost in the final. So, it’s given us even more motivation to go the whole way this season, after losing the final and being so close to that.”

United would lose last season’s FA Cup final to rivals Manchester City, but if they hope to better that feat this season, then they will need to first pass Nottingham Forest in the fifth-round of the competition.
