Patrick Dorgu has seemingly made his feelings clear about Scott McTominay’s exit from Manchester United after he faced him on international duty.
Patrick Dorgu was signed at Manchester United at the beginning of 2025 and so he was never teammates with Scott McTominay at Old Trafford.
But, like everyone, he would have been aware of the Scotsman’s incredible rise in Italy, where he won the Serie A Player of the Year last term.
Dorgu faced McTominay for Denmark earlier this week and the Scotland midfielder stole the show as he scored a bicycle kick to open the scoring in a 4-2 win for Steve Clarke’s men. That result ensured Scotland secured an automatic place at the World Cup next year.
There has been a lot of talk about McTominay’s exit from United in recent months, with many labelling it as a huge mistake by those in charge at Old Trafford.
Dorgu makes feelings clear about McTominay’s United exit
Dorgu was asked about McTominay following on from Denmark’s defeat against Scotland and he made his feelings clear about the midfielder.
While the Danish defender appreciated McTominay’s ‘good goal’ he also made sure to mention how there are good players at United and how the club is in a ‘really good position’.
“It was a good goal but we also have enough good players at United as well,” Dorgu said, as quoted by the Daily Record. “I am happy for him winning the league in Napoli.
“We are in a really good position at United. We will go back with confidence to help the team to get more wins.
“Denmark is now March. It is a long time and we just need to concentrate on club matters until then.”
McTominay’s sale only a mistake because of poor replacement
Dorgu’s response was the right one and the problem around McTominay’s exit has never been about the player himself.
The Scotsman was almost handicapped in the deeper midfield role at Old Trafford but with players like Bruno Fernandes in the team, he was never going to be able to reach his best form.
There were certainly arguments to keep him as a squad player but the sale to Napoli was never the problem. It was who United replaced him with.
Manuel Ugarte came in for more than McTominay was sold for and he has yet to show any reason why United paid the money for him.
The Uruguayan has struggled every time he’s stepped on the pitch so far this term and that is a big reason why the McTominay sale is viewed as a mistake.
If he was replaced better then the situation would be different, and United fans could simply appreciate what he is doing out in Italy without feeling like he shouldn’t have been sold.
