Wayne Rooney: Rúben Amorim doesn’t have the RIGHT to demand complete control at Manchester United

Wayne Rooney has issued his thoughts on Rúben Amorim’s recent comment surrounding his level of control at Manchester United.

Manchester United’s recent trip to face Leeds at Elland Road ended with a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon, following goals from Brenden Aaronson and Matheus Cunha.

However, after the full-time whistle, Rúben Amorim launched into an explosive rant during his post-match press conference, stating that he wanted to “be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United,” effectively demanding more control.

He went on to hint at struggles between him and United’s other decision-makers, such as Director of Football Jason Wilcox, claiming that every department, including scouts and the sporting director, “needs to do their job.”

Further, reports have emerged that the United boss’ position in the dugout has been thrown into serious doubt after his comments.

Rooney: Amorim must earn the right to control

Following the 40-year-old’s outburst on Sunday afternoon, former United striker Wayne Rooney has stated that Amorim has not earned the right across his career to be calling all the shots at the club.

When put to him if he feels Amorim is trying to get himself sacked, Rooney said: “Well, I think you need to earn the right, you need to earn the right to be able to dictate exactly what happens in a football club, especially a football club like Man United.

“And if [Pep] Guardiola comes into Manchester United, for instance, I don’t think anyone would question what players he wants to bring in or the system.

“I feel for him a little bit, but he’s not Pep Guardiola, he’s not Jürgen Klopp, he hasn’t got that history or that background, so I don’t think he should be speaking with that authority in what he is, and I just think the words he’s saying are very confusing to me.”

Amorim frustrated by input from board members

According to talkSPORT, there are multiple reasons Amorim’s relationship with United’s owners, particularly Wilcox, is becoming tense.

A central reason Amorim’s frustrations have boiled over in the last few days is that those above him have demanded he become more tactically flexible, rather than just using the back-three formation he is wedded to.

He is also said to feel that promises made to him regarding incomings in January have been broken, with United now expected to have a quiet window.

There are reportedly reservations growing in United’s boardroom surrounding the Portuguese boss, and crunch talks will need to be held.
