“I’ll be honest…” Wayne Rooney names his ‘standout’ player of the season for Man Utd after shock Liverpool victory

Wayne Rooney has named his ‘standout player’ this season for Manchester United, who has proved him wrong, after the Reds’ shock victory at Anfield.

Manchester United’s start to the new campaign has been improving lately, with their recent victory over Liverpool being the highlight for Ruben Amorim’s side so far.

The Reds went to Anfield to face an out-of-form Liverpool side, where they walked away with an impressive 2-1 victory thanks to goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire.

This result has taken Amorim’s side to ninth in the Premier League with 13 points from eight fixtures. Not a bad tally, considering they have already played four of the other five sides in the traditional ‘big six’.

Many of United’s starters earned some plaudits following their shock win against their bitter rivals at the weekend, but one particular Red Devil has been hailed as Wayne Rooney’s ‘standout’ star.

Rooney hails ‘standout’ Mbeumo

When speaking on his podcast with the BBC, the United legend named Mbeumo as the Red Devils’ player of the season so far.

He said, “For me, he [Mbuemo] has been Manchester United’s standout player this season, and he hasn’t got his rewards for his hard work and the sacrifices he’s made for the team.

“It was a great goal. I’ll be honest, I was a bit sceptical when United signed him. I don’t know if he had the ability to come and play for Manchester United, but he’s proved me wrong.

“I think he’s been a great addition to the team and by far United’s best player of the season.”

The tides turning at United?

It was only a few weeks ago that everything around United felt very gloomy, but due to some improved results, the mood surrounding the club has picked up tremendously.

Despite a disappointing loss at Brentford a few weeks ago, the Reds have managed to pick up an impressive nine points in their last four league fixtures, against Chelsea, Sunderland, and now Liverpool.

With a slightly nicer run of fixtures on the horizon, it could present Amorim’s side with the perfect opportunity to keep building their momentum and climb up the table.

Next up for United is a home fixture against Brighton, before a couple of away fixtures against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur.
