“Was that really necessary?” – Paul Scholes rips into Manchester United’s two best summer transfers, his argument is baffling

Paul Scholes has ripped into two of Manchester United’s summer signings in a damming statement on The Overlap Fan Debate Show.

Manchester United’s summer recruitment has largely focused on improving the attacking areas of the squad after Rúben Amorim’s side scored just 44 goals in the Premier League last season.

Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo join the club off the back of brilliant seasons in front of goal, while Benjamin Šeško replaces Rasmus Hojlund after his dismal goal-scoring efforts last campaign.

With Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho all leaving Old Trafford this summer – along with Hojlund – United needed to recruit in the attacking areas, or they risked losing all goal threat after one or two injuries.

While United are yet to showcase their true attacking strength this season, they have started almost every game as the better side and failed to convert chances when dominating the game, chances that they weren’t creating last season.

Scholes criticises Cunha and Mbeumo signings

While many United fans agree that Cunha and Mbeumo have been two of United’s better players this season, with their attacking flair, not everybody shares the same opinion.

Speaking on The Fan Overlap Debate Show, United legend Paul Scholes spoke about Cunha and Mbeumo as new additions.

“Bringing two No.10s (Cunha and Mbeumo) was that really necessary? You think you’ve got Mason MountKobbie Mainoo can do that… If you’ve done that and wasted a bit of money and not been able to get a midfield player or a goalkeeper, it’s not great recruitment-wise, is it?

“I can’t make better what a lot of the problems are in the team, which are two central midfield players, and the goalkeepers are massive.”

The episode was clearly recorded before United signed Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, but Scholes’ view would stay the same, as no midfielder has joined the club.

Baffling argument from Scholes proven by Cunha injury

Against Burnley, Cunha started the game as the centre forward and came close to scoring in the first half, but made an early exit for Joshua Zirkzee due to a hamstring problem.

Mount – who was also injured – was forced into playing the rest of the half and was withdrawn at halftime for Mainoo, and Bruno Fernandes moved into the attack.

Going into the derby after the international break, United could be without Mount and Cunha, leaving just Mbeumo and Fernandes as attacking midfield options if Amad stays at wing-back.

However, in the double pivot, Amorim still has Casemiro, Manuel Ugarte and Mainoo to choose from. United should have signed a midfielder, but not at the expense of an attacker, like Scholes says.
