Manchester United will be hoping for injury returns as Erik ten Hag takes his team to Istanbul in a bid to defeat Galatasaray in the Champions League.

Manchester United’s Champions League campaign has been nothing short of a disaster so far, with Erik ten Hag having won just one of their four games in the competition and sitting at the bottom of Group A.

Rasmus Højlund is currently the side’s top scorer in the competition, with a total of five goals in four games and is fighting a late fitness test to gain a travelling spot. An update on Monday evening described that although he is back to training on grass and is being closely monitored ahead of Wednesday’s game, he is unlikely to be able to start.

A role off the bench is more likely.

Marcus Rashford, who scored in the recent Premier League victory, is banned from playing after he received a red card in the last game, a 4-3 loss to FC Copenhagen.

Luke Shaw recently returned from his long layoff to play 76 minutes against Everton and will be fit to travel as he is reintegrated into Ten Hag’s team.

Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martínez remain out of action as they recover from their respective operations. Malacia is expected back sooner than his defensive partner, who is out until at least the new year.

Kobbie Mainoo is back to full fitness after making his first Premier League start on the weekend. He may be in line to start again as neither Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, or Mason Mount are expected to travel.

There is yet to be an update on the situation of Brazilian winger Antony, who missed the trip to Goodison Park with a knock.

For Galatasaray, manager Okan Buruk confirmed that Davinson Sánchez will not play for Galatasaray on Wednesday.

“Sanchez does not have the condition to play with injection therapy,” confirmed Buruk on Tuesday afternoon. “We expect him to return to the team in two or three weeks.”

A late call is expected on Sanchez’s defensive partner Abdulkerim Bardakc, who has played regularly this season – he missed Galatasaray’s match on the weekend.

Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera is fit to play after a slight worry. Former United and Crystal Palace player Wilfried Zaha, who scored in the reverse fixture, is expected to start on Wednesday.
