André Onana has recalled the ‘unthinkable’ heroics from Amad Diallo during Manchester United’s comeback win against Manchester City.

Manchester United have had a difficult start to life under new boss Ruben Amorim, winning just four of his opening 10 fixtures.

Despite the poor form, there have been positives to take and United have been unfortunate to be on the losing side in some of those games.

The standout moment so far has been the Manchester Derby win at the Etihad Stadium earlier this month.

Amad Diallo won a penalty, which Bruno Fernandes converted, before scoring the winner to turn around the scoreline in the final moments of the game.

The Ivorian has been one of the standout performers for United this season, and particularly under Amorim so far.

Onana stunned by Amad’s heroics in Manchester Derby

United goalkeeper André Onana has a close relationship with Amad, who he considers to be like a little brother to him.

The 28-year-old has detailed the ‘difficult game’ against City and how Amad’s contribution at the end was ‘unthinkable’.

His praise for a player who he believes can be the ‘best in the world’ was extremely high, and he believes that Amad is already setting an example at Old Trafford.

“It was the goal we needed and the perfect timing because it was a difficult game, they had control, and he wins a penalty. Two minutes later, he scores a fantastic goal,” Onana told SuperSport.

“This is unthinkable, no? I was so proud of him and it was a big responsibility for him because, at the end of the day, he’s being young and a leader.

“A lot of African people, a lot of people his age or younger than him try to be like him. So it’s an example. It’s nice but at the same time it’s a lot of responsibility.

“I’m proud of what he’s doing, the way he’s behaving, the way he’s training, the way he conducts himself.

“I’m going to guide him, give him advice, I will be here for anything he needs as a big brother. I will push him to be one of the best players in the world.”

Amad’s patience at United has paid off

You can’t really blame anyone for thinking it wasn’t going to work out for Amad at Old Trafford before May this year.

His incredible last-minute winner against Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-final was not immediately followed up with chances in the team like many thought would happen.

It took almost two months before a short run of games at the end of the season showed that Amad could properly compete at the top level. This campaign so far has only reinforced that.

It was no fault of his own, but Amad had to wait longer than most for his chance. Signing for the club for big money as a teenager in 2021, it took a long time before Amad could truly show United’s supporters his talent.

Now, it seems incredible that the Ivorian is entering the final months of his contract at Old Trafford, but it is clear that he wants to stay and it looks like he will be getting the new deal that his patience, and quality, deserves.
