“Unbelievable finisher” remains keen on Manchester United move despite January transfer breakdown
Manchester United saw a move for Mathys Tel break down in the January transfer window.
Mathys Tel’s deadline-day move to Tottenham Hotspur was one of the most unexpected twists of the January transfer window, especially after strong interest from Manchester United.
During the January window, United successfully secured the signings of Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven.
Dorgu’s arrival was a key addition for Ruben Amorim’s squad, addressing their urgent need for more quality in the wingback position. Meanwhile, Heaven could play a more significant role than initially expected following Lisandro Martínez’s ACL injury.
However, the club was unable to sign a forward, despite loaning out Antony and Marcus Rashford for the remainder of the season, which leaves them short up front.
Tel had reportedly agreed to join United, but the club failed to reach an agreement with Bayern Munich, and Spurs swooped in to sign the player on loan.
Tel remains keen on potential United move
The exciting Frenchman, who has been described as “an unbelievable finisher” by Bayern star Thomas Muller, made his debut for Spurs in their 4-0 defeat to Liverpool on Thursday evening.
The North London club have the option to make his stay permanent in the summer although he will get the final decision in where his future lies.
According to a new report from Christian Falk, Tel would still like to make a move to Old Trafford if it is possible to do so in the summer.
It remains to be seen whether United would be interested in the player, with the available options to improve the squad being far greater in summer windows.
However, the buy-option Spurs have for the player is currently set at around £45 million, and United could see that figure as a decent fee if Tel impresses in the Premier League before the end of the season.
Speaking on the decision to go without a striker signing in the mid-season window, Amorim said: “It was my decision to do that. We are taking some risks but it’s the way we want to proceed.
“We want to win some games, we can improve our team, we will have time to train because I’m always complaining about the time to train, so now we have time to train, and the team will improve.
