Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia has spent the second half of the season on loan at Dutch side PSV, who have won the Eredivisie title.
After a long and difficult battle with injuries over a two-year period, Tyrell Malacia came back to fitness just in time for Ruben Amorim’s arrival at Manchester United.
Despite this, after a handful of games under the Portuguese coach, it became clear that Malacia wouldn’t be getting the game-time he desperately needed after such a long time out of action.
United signed 20-year-old Patrick Dorgu and sent Malacia out on loan back to the Netherlands, joining PSV Eindhoven on a six-month loan.
Malacia got to celebrate winning the Eredivisie on the weekend after an incredible late-season push from PSV snatched the title from under Ajax’s nose.
Malacia sends major hint over PSV future
There are lots of rumours surrounding United’s other loanees – Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Antony – but not so much attention on Malacia’s future.
It was reported that PSV have an option to buy the player this summer but that seems unlikely after he played a minimal part in their campaign.
Malacia only started three games in the league for the Dutch side and it is clear that PSV have a starting fullback pairing that will be difficult for the United loanee to break into.
In fact, the player himself has suggested that his time at the club will be over after he returns from loan. On Instagram, he posted images of him celebrating with the team and captioned the post, “Closing this chapter with a smile.”
With the player’s time at PSV likely coming to an end, United will need to look for a permanent exit for the player, who is largely unlikely to be able to make his way back into Amorim’s plans.
PSV loan had clear purpose for Malacia
United are unlikely to be able to command a large fee for Malacia. Unlike with Antony or Rashford, his loan spell hasn’t boosted his price tag.
However, his time back in the Netherlands has given him the opportunity to showcase his fitness levels after injury which could help convince other clubs to take a gamble on him.
Beforehand, it felt like it would be difficult to sell the player simply because many clubs would consider the signing too much of a risk due to his lengthy spell on the sidelines.
That is a problem that is much less prominent now, and things should be easier for all parties moving into the summer transfer window.
