Tyrell Malacia made his debut for PSV Eindhoven on the weekend after departing Manchester United on loan during the January transfer window.

Tyrell Malacia made a deadline day move back to his home country after almost two years of struggles at Manchester United.

After a positive debut campaign at Old Trafford, the defender missed out on the entire of the 2023/24 campaign with knee injuries.

Then, despite returning to fitness this season, it was clear that Malacia did not fit into the system of new head coach Ruben Amorim.

Consistent minutes are exactly what Malacia needs and he wasn’t going to get that at United, which made a loan move to PSV Eindhoven a good move for the player and club.

His start for the Dutch club went well after being thrown into the starting XI against Willem II. Despite drawing the game 1-1, Malacia produced a decent performance before being replaced late in the second half.

Malacia’s honest assessment on United struggles

Malacia spoke to the media after the game and expressed his happiness about the move but not with his first result back in the Eredivisie.

“Of course I’m happy with my debut, but certainly not with the result,” Malacia told Dutch outlet NOS.

“I’m happy to be here and have been well received by the fans, also by the guys in the team and the staff.”

Malacia also provided an assessment on his time at United, where he admitted it hadn’t been “going well” after his return from injury.

“It wasn’t good enough, our tempo was too slow and we didn’t score enough. But I think we have to keep our heads up, because we have to be there again on Tuesday,” he continued.

“I don’t know if you’ve watched football, but where I was in England it wasn’t going well either. I try to give energy to the team.”

United loan strategy could work

So far, it seems like United’s decision to send several first-team players on loan could become a good one if they continue good form for their respective teams.

Antony has won back-to-back Man of the Match awards in his first two games at Real Betis and Malacia also started well.

Marcus Rashford is set to make his debut for Aston Villa in the FA Cup this weekend.

If all three of those players can perform well during their loan spells, it could give United a better chance of generating more funds for transfers in the summer window.
