Two reasons why Tom Huddlestone plays for Man United academy after Man City goal
Manchester United supporters enjoyed some jokes online after Tom Huddlestone scored the winning goal against Manchester City’s Under-21s on Monday evening.
Huddlestone, 37, made the difference in the Manchester derby between the two young sides in a game where talented winger Sam Mather was sent off.
However, whilst the former Hull City and Wolves midfielder has been operating in his academy role for over a year, his goal provided entertainment for those online.
One fan wrote: “Starboy. Carrington has done it again with this Tom Huddlestone guy.” Another posted: “Great prospect, remember the name.”
On the other hand, some have questioned why the 37-year-old is playing for United’s youth side. He was signed by the club in an academy coach/player role in August 2022.
It was announced by the club that Huddlestone would continue in the role at the start of this season, with a statement explaining the two main reasons for Huddlestone’s involvement.
He is able to aid the development of the youth players at Carrington both on and off the pitch, adding an experienced head and is able to help ‘coach’ players in games.
The former Premier League player is also able to further his own coaching skills in a role that has been described as ‘innovative’.
“By working with the other coaches, he [Huddlestone] has been able to pass on his experience to the club’s youngsters, even during some matches when taking to the field,” a club statement explained.
“The experienced midfielder will continue to create various unique development opportunities for United’s Academy players by coaching from within training sessions and driving daily standards on and off the pitch.
“Tom will continue to further his coaching skills, working alongside Academy experts, to deliver an excellent programme for our players.”
It is also important to note that Huddlestone is not a regular player in the team. He has recently been playing following Dan Gore’s loan exit from the club.
