There are a couple of reasons why Manchester United might need to wait to complete any kind of deal for Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres this summer.
After a disappointing season, Manchester United are acting quickly in the transfer market as they aim to rebuild ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Ruben Amorim has made his first move by bringing in Matheus Cunha, and the club’s focus has now shifted to Bryan Mbeumo, who is open to a move to Old Trafford. Discussions with Brentford are expected to begin in the coming days.
The search for a new striker is also underway, with several names on United’s shortlist. Bringing in all three attacking reinforcements would significantly strengthen a frontline that lacked consistency last season.
Liam Delap was the preferred choice upfront to begin with but he opted for a move to Chelsea, while there is a growing feeling that United could secure a deal for Viktor Gyokeres.
Fabrizio Romano update on Gyokeres deal
When Amorim first arrived at Old Trafford, signing Gyokeres this summer almost felt like a guarantee up until the Reds failed to qualify for Champions League football.
But with clubs elsewhere going for other targets, United’s chances of securing the Swedish striker seem to be growing and reports have explained that the lack of European football is not a dealbreaker for him.
Fresh updates from Fabrizio Romano have stated that Gyokeres considered Champions League football as important before the end of the season but that he is open to assessing his options.
The Italian reporter states that United have a chance of signing the striker but that outgoings are going to be crucial to get a deal over the line.
United’s initial summer budget will be used on the deals for Mbeumo and Cunha – then the Reds will need to find a way to get departures over the line.
Two reasons why United will need to wait for Gyokeres deal
As mentioned by Romano, this deal could end up being more prolonged than United would like due to the fact that they need to sell players.
The likes of Antony, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford are players available for transfer but it feels inevitable that we will be waiting towards the end of the window for their exits.
Alejandro Garnacho is perhaps the only big player who could end up having an early departure, making room in the budget for the Gyokeres deal, with several clubs interested in his signature.
But even then, completing a deal will be delayed slightly more by the fact that the transfer window closes for almost a week on this coming Tuesday. This early part of the split-window was designed to give teams participating in the Club World Cup the chance to sign players before the tournament begins.
United haven’t wasted their time in this portion of the market, likely to end it with two deals over the line, but will soon have a six-day wait until the 16 June to continue their business.
Gyokeres does feel like a deal that could get over the line but it won’t happen as quickly as many fans want, although there would still be more than enough time to get him ahead of the beginning of pre-season.
