Manchester United are preparing for a trip to Molineux next month as Rúben Amorim’s in-form Reds face a Wolves side struggling for form, with two former bosses among the names tipped to take charge.
Rúben Amorim will be hoping his team can maintain momentum in what could be a tricky test for the Reds.
Manchester United’s last win over Wolves came when Erik ten Hag was the manager in February 2024, when a thrilling spectacle unfolded – United won 4‑3 thanks to a dazzling display from Kobbie Mainoo, proving that Wolves are never easy opponents for the Red Devils.
Wolves have struggled to find wins this season in the Premier League and appear in a sorry state. If improvements are not made, they are simply destined for the Championship. All eyes could be on the dugout that day, as a familiar face might just be in the opposing technical area.
Amid Wolves needing to find a new manager after Gary O’Neil, the initial favourite, pulled out of the running, The Mirror have reported that both Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Ten Hag are listed as possible replacements on the agenda.
For Solskjær, it is not the first time he has been linked to the managerial role at Molineux. For Ten Hag, it may be his first managerial post since his abrupt exit from Bayer Leverkusen – a transition from friend to potential foe.
Who is the better fit?
Solskjær has always been lauded for his ability to come into a club, boost morale, and instil belief. At United, he was able to reignite confidence among players and bring out the best in them. For a while, the feel-good factor was back at Old Trafford.
Wolves, currently low on confidence and struggling for results, might benefit most from a manager who can immediately lift spirits, motivate the squad, and unify the group – look no further than Solskjær.
If Wolves have a longer-term plan of stabilising the club and eventually winning trophies, Ten Hag is the answer. He made a number of mistakes at United, but he did manage to win two trophies in his two years there.
The reception for the Norwegian would likely be a friendly one from the United away end should he get the job. He may just make Wolves fans “happy when skies are grey,” as the chant goes.
The manager bounce struggle for United
United have so often succumbed to the new-manager bounce, most recently away to Nottingham Forest, where they could only manage a draw.
Former Wolves boss Vítor Pereira’s first home game was a win against United back in December of last year, when Matheus Cunha, who now plays for the Reds, stole the show. United will be looking for revenge.
The character of Amorim’s men will be tested once more. They appear to have developed a swagger about their game, as well as a steeliness when required, which will please the Portuguese head coach.
United have won four of their last six games, including against Brighton and Liverpool, which will instil hope in travelling fans ahead of their next fixture, against Tottenham in North London.
