Troy Deeney has urged one of the Premier League’s breakout stars from this season to sign for Manchester United.
Manchester United’s forward line this season has been poor to say the least. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have combined for a total of six goals in the Premier League.
United are set to be very busy in the upcoming summer transfer window, with Ruben Amorim looking to completely overhaul the squad to usher in a new era that can play in his tactical setup.
United’s financial issues going into this summer are very clear, with estimates saying United could have as little as 30 million pounds to play with.
There will, however, be a number of outlays where there is potential for some money. Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho are just some of the names confirmed to be leaving Old Trafford this summer, and will demand a fee.
With that being said, United will look to sign a whole host of players, meaning they have to be able to sign good players for cheap fees, and Troy Deeney may have given them a hint as to who to go for.
Deeney says Delap to United is perfect match
Speaking on TalkSPORT, Troy Deeney insisted that Liam Delap and United would be a perfect match for each other, with both parties benefiting from this proposed move.
He said: “He has to play [to get into England squad] right? So his next step would be, if I was advising him would be that with Man United it’s nailed on. If he went to Man United, he’d start every week. He’d instantly make them better.”
This season, Delap has scored 12 times in a poor Ipswich side, and with his side’s confirmed relegation, his £40 million release clause will drop to £30 million.
Although Manchester City have a buy-back clause of £40 million, it’s reported that they aren’t looking at triggering it at this stage. Delap is also understood to make his decision based on what is best for his career development.
While already proven in the Premier League, Deeney also compared the forward’s mentality to some of the greatest attackers this league has seen.
“You need to have a nasty streak as a striker. Everyone looks at Ian Wright, Thierry Henry, Wayne Rooney – these nice guys when they’re talking about football,” he continued.
“There’s a streak in there because they want to score. They want to win, any striker that’s on there has to have this element of nastiness to get it done.”
Is Delap the right age profile?
As normal, United have been linked with a number of star strikers including Victor Osimhen, and Amorim’s former striker, Viktor Gyokeres from his time at Sporting Lisbon.
Despite the strong links, especially with Gyokeres, these players may prove to be too costly considering their financial problems going into the summer and the lack of Champions League football.
Many people will have been wanting United to buy a more experienced footballer, from who Hojlund and Zirkzee could learn from and make sub appearances until they gain enough experience, like how Harry Kane was linked to United.
Unfortunately, that kind of striker age profile isn’t really possible with such a small amount to spend in the summer, and if Delap can score 12 goals for a team like Ipswich, then surely it can only get better for him at Old Trafford.
