Troy Deeney rips into Manchester United star for Alejandro Garnacho issue, he couldn’t be more wrong
Troy Deeney has ripped into one Manchester United star for being a poor role model to Alejandro Garnacho against Leicester City, but he’s wrong.
Alejandro Garnacho was among the goals as Manchester United secured a 3-0 victory over Leicester City in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s final match as interim manager, just ahead of Rúben Amorim’s arrival.
After starting in United’s previous three matches, Garnacho began the Premier League fixture on the bench but was given his opportunity in the second half, coming on for Marcus Rashford.

The young winger had faced criticism recently, with a fan confronting him before a game earlier in the week. However, he responded emphatically against Leicester, netting a brilliant curling strike to seal the win.
Much attention, though, was drawn to Garnacho’s subdued reaction after his goal. Club captain Bruno Fernandes suggested it was a reflection of the criticism Garnacho has received from fans lately.
Rashford ripped into
Speaking to talkSPORT, former Premier League striker Troy Deeney has pinpointed Rashford as a man who should be setting a better example for Garnacho following his reaction to scoring on the weekend.
“For a little while now, let’s be honest, he hasn’t delivered to the standard that we know he can,” Deeney said of Rashford.
“When I see what happened with Garnacho at the weekend, he scores and he’s a bit sulky because a few fans have decided to get on his case or whatever.
“I think that stems from Marcus as well – and hear me out on this when Marcus is throwing his arms about and [is acting like] the world owes him a favour, what if you’re a young player you’re looking up to him? Why would you not go ‘well I’m gonna act the same way’?”
Rashford’s role-model history
Despite Deeney’s comments, he could not be more wrong about Marcus Rashford.
Time and time again, Academy stars who have graduated from Carrington and joined United’s first team have explained how Rashford is a fantastic role model.
Kobbie Mainoo and Garnacho, two of the club’s brightest young stars, have continually explained that Rashford has been a pillar of advice during the transition between the Academy and first-team.
There is little argument that Rashford is not at his best, and it feels as if Amorim’s arrival signals his final chance to prove himself as a United player. However, as a role model, the evidence from within shows he plays that role well.
