Former Manchester United centre-back David May has hit out at one man who had an “absolute shocker” during Tottenham Hotspur’s Carabao Cup win on Thursday evening.

Manchester United’s Carabao Cup journey came to an end after a pulsating 4-3 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-finals, with Rúben Amorim’s side left to rue missed opportunities and defensive lapses on a dramatic night in North London.

The match began with United showing flashes of quality, but they struggled to cope with Spurs’ high energy. A fumble from Altay Bayındır allowed Dominic Solanke to open the scoring, giving the hosts a first-half lead.

Things worsened after the break when Dejan Kulusevski doubled Tottenham’s advantage with a composed finish. Solanke then struck again, seemingly putting the game out of reach at 3-0.

United, however, were not done. Bruno Fernandes sparked life into the team with a brilliant assist for Joshua Zirkzee to grab one back. Amad Diallo followed up with a clinical strike to narrow the gap to 3-2 with 20 minutes still to play.

Just as United looked to be mounting a comeback, controversy struck as Son Heung-min scored directly from a corner. Bayındır protested he was fouled, but the goal stood, giving Spurs a 4-2 lead.

Jonny Evans added a late header to make it 4-3, but Tottenham held on, sending United out of the competition in a match filled with drama and heartbreak for the visitors.

The referee had an “absolute shocker” during the game

After full-time, former United centre-back and MUTV co-commentator David May hit out at referee John Brooks for allowing Tottenham’s fourth goal of the night to stand.

After Son swung the corner in, one of Bayındır’s arms was held down by Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall, with the Turkish goalkeeper insistent that he was impeded and therefore fouled.

May said: “The referee’s had an absolute shocker. how on earth he does not see that? Even the linesman should see it. It’s despicable.”

However, May conceded that United also defended poorly for the other three goals conceded, meaning the referee cannot be held solely accountable for the loss.

“We actually put ourselves in that position with our defending for the second and third goal. Even the first goal is preventable following the shot at the edge of the box, you’ve got to follow things in.

“We got back in the game, and it was there to be taken. And again, the referee made a mistake, a big mistake for me being here. [Bayindir] certainly got his arm taken away.”

Wes Brown, also a former United defender, explained that he also felt the referee made the wrong call, and had VAR been in place, there would have been a different outcome.

“I do think if the VAR is there, the referee does give a foul,” Brown added. “Obviously, he still has to do better, he has to be stronger. I honestly do think the VAR pulls that one back.”
