Toby Collyer set for Championship return following manager’s transfer admission upon Old Trafford return

Toby Collyer was recalled from West Bromwich Albion in December due to an injury issue, but could go back on loan in January.

After making his senior debut in the Community Shield last season against Manchester City, Toby Collyer ended the season on the fringes of the first team after years of fighting for a chance.

Rúben Amorim particularly took a liking to the midfielder, giving him regular minutes in the Premier League and Europa League after the turn of the year in 2025 before a leg injury restricted his minutes by the end of the season.

In a bid to give the player more minutes, he was allowed to go on loan this season to Championship side West Brom. It was a stint plagued by injuries, but he did impress when he was out on the pitch.

He was recalled to Manchester United to continue his rehabilitation from his injuries at Carrington.

Hull actively in for Collyer

According to the Manchester Evening News, Amorim had hoped to assess the player when fully fit to see if he could fit into the current system during the midfield injury crisis.

However, after the sacking of the Portuguese coach, his future is wide open, with a potential loan return to the Championship on the cards. The player is expected to be back fit before the end of January.

Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic has come out and revealed that not only are his side in for the player, but that they could sign the player this window.

In his press conference, he said: “We have an option to bring Collyer from Man United, so we will see.

“We spoke already this summer. It was a very nice conversation together with Jonny Evans at that time, who was the loan manager (at United), but at that time, he chose West Brom, which is okay, I respect that.

“Maybe he didn’t believe that we would have a good season, and have a good team. It was tricky back then, when you have an embargo, you cannot bring the players. Also, you must look after yourself because you need the minutes, and maybe in our team it’s easier to get the minutes.”

United must send more to Championship

The Championship is widely regarded as one of the most physical leagues in the world, but also in recent times it has grown with its technical level too, becoming the perfect place for young, inexperienced talent to grow their abilities.

The likes of Manchester City and Chelsea consistently loan out their players to the Championship and often reap the rewards of it. Even if the player does not become a first-team regular when they return, the exposure to the championship has improved them as a player, so they are able to be moved on for considerable fees.

While in recent times United have started to improve with the loan system with the likes of James Garner, Ethan Laird, Hannibal Mejbri, Tahith Chong, to name a few, and Harry Amass currently, all excelling and earning brilliant career moves after, United can still do more.

Any first-team exposure is good for the academy players. United players often go to League One and League Two, whereas other teams regularly ship out players to the Championship.
