Three reasons why Manchester United prefer Liam Delap over Viktor Gyökeres this summer revealed

Manchester United reportedly prefer a move for Liam Delap this summer over several other strikers, including Ruben Amorim’s former goalscorer Viktor Gyökeres.

Ruben Amorim’s biggest priority in the upcoming summer transfer window at Manchester United is to secure a goalscoring striker.

This season has proven that the current options at Old Trafford are not good enough to lead the line across an entire campaign.

Rasmus Højlund has only scored three goals in the Premier League this term while Joshua Zirkzee has netted the same amount. Neither of them are ready to be the starting striker for a successful side.

Various strikers have been linked with a move to United to fix this issue, including the likes of Victor Osimhen, Liam Delap and Viktor Gyökeres.

Why United prefer Delap over Gyökeres

It has been reported this week by Mark Ogden of ESPN that Delap of Ipswich Town is the preferred option at United for a summer move ahead of other options.

The report explains that the Reds are planning to rival Chelsea in the race to sign the 22-year-old centre-forward, who will be available for £40 million if the Tractor Boys are relegated to the Championship.

Despite also having interest in Gyökeres, Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko, United have identified Delap as the solution to their goalscoring issues.

It was further explained that there are three main reasons why United prefer a move for Delap over Gyökeres, who was Amorim’s main goalscorer at Sporting.

The potential cost of a move, the age profile and a proven record in the Premier League are the main factors favouring Delap over the Swedish international.

United fans have Delap concerns

Delap has scored 11 goals in the Premier League this season for a poor Ipswich side and some would suggest those numbers could increase if he joins a better team.

Understandably, there are still doubts among the United fanbase, with many supporters of the belief that the club should be signing an experienced striker after the struggles Højlund has had.

On the other hand, the idea that you should not sign a young player because another has had issues is not the best possible idea.

Delap is clearly a very talented striker and the fact he already has experience of playing in England’s top flight cannot be underestimated.

He would undoubtably be an upgrade on United’s current options but even if he signs, those uncertainties will exist up until he starts scoring on a consistent basis at Old Trafford.
