As the international break comes to an end, Manchester United will return to Carrington to join those who did not travel as the team hopes to continue their good form.
The full Manchester United squad returns to training this week ahead of their Monday game against Everton at Old Trafford.
Key players such as Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes return after a successful international break, as well as the imperative Lisandro Martinez, who is in the final stages of his rehabilitation.
Since the disastrous defeat to Manchester City, Ruben Amorim’s side have been on a run of good form in the Premier League, recording three wins and drawing twice in five games.
One player in particular has completely revamped his performances and has become a key player in Amorim’s back line.
Tuchel will call Shaw about England ambitions
After an inconsistent start to the season, Luke Shaw has improved significantly in recent games. The defender has started all of United’s opening eleven league fixtures this year and has become one of Amorim’s best players in the process.
Shaw has represented England 34 times in his career and, most notably, scored the opening goal in the European Championships final against Italy in 2021.
England manager Thomas Tuchel left the 30-year-old out of the November World Cup qualifiers in favour of Djed Spence and Nico O’Reilly. That said, Tuchel has not ruled out Shaw for his World Cup squad, explaining that he will call a host of players who missed out on the November fixtures.
“Players like Trent [Alexander-Arnold], players that are on our long list, 55, 60 players, to reach out to them, be in touch with them, explain to them why they were not here,” Tuchel said last week. “Explain to them what they have to do, where they can improve.”
Shaw will be eager to see what Tuchel has to say to him as he eyes up a place in England’s squad to travel to America in the summer of 2026.
Amorim makes Selfish Shaw claim
The United team has built decent cohesion so far this season. Players like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo have arrived and seem to have slotted straight in.
This has partly been because of Amorim’s senior figures, which include Harry Maguire, Caemiro, and Shaw, players who have the experience to guide other teammates out of periods of struggle.
Despite some of the senior players leaving for international duty, Amorim admitted he is in two minds about a player like Shaw playing for England, as on one hand, he deserves the call-up, but on the other, no fixtures gives him ample time for recovery.
“For me, I want him to go to the national team, but I also want Luke Shaw to train with me, recover with me, and be prepared for my game, so I’m a little bit selfish on that, so if he’s not going to the national team, for me it’s fine, because I can control better what he’s doing,”
There’s no doubt that Shaw remains one of Amorim’s most influential players at the club, and both manager and player will look to continue their good run of form.
