Thomas Tuchel’s England stance on Marcus Rashford explained after Manchester United heroics
Thomas Tuchel’s view on Marcus Rashford has been explained as the Manchester United forward is touted for a potential recall to the England squad.
Across the international break, many focused on whether Erik ten Hag will remain in charge of Manchester United following poor results in the Premier Legaue and Europa League.
With former Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel available then, some thought that Sir Jim Ratcliffe would pull the trigger on Ten Hag’s contract and appoint the German manager at Old Trafford.

However, as the two-week break went on, it became increasingly clear that the Dutch manager would keep his position at the club. In a big twist, Tuchel was announced as England’s new manager after Gareth Southgate stepped down.
Although Tuchel will not officially take charge of England until January 2025, there has already been rife speculation about who will make Tuchel’s squad for the 2026 World Cup across America, Canada, and Mexico.
Tuchel’s view on Rashford
Thomas Tuchel has never hidden his awe for Rashford. The new England manager, speaking in 2020 while head coach of French side Paris Saint-Germain, spoke of the 26-year-old’s abilities following a stunning goal in the Champions League against the Ligue 1 outfit.
“We value him very much when he plays in England and not Parc des Princes, honestly, because (him scoring against us) gets a little bit annoying.
“I have met him as an opponent three times, and every time, I’ve met a calm and humble guy and a nice person, which is amazing. I like this mixture a lot.
“For me personally, the sporting side is clear – he’s a big threat with his speed, with his ability to score, with his determination and his finishing. He’s very precise, taking shots inside and outside of the box.
“He is super rapid on counter-attacks and strong in the air with headers. He’s had a big impact and it’s nice to see guys like him from the academy having such a big impact in a big, big club like United.”
A potential return to England
Rashford has not played for England since March 2024, when he played 15 minutes as a substitute against Brazil in a friendly fixture at Wembley Stadium. His last start for the Three Lions came in November 2023, where he played 61 minutes against Malta in a 2024 European Championship qualifier.
However, Tuchel’s appointment as the new manager of England after Gareth Southgate stepped down has given the United forward new-found hope of a call-up.
There is no doubt that Rashford will be aiming for a spot on the plane for the 2028 World Cup, and with Tuchel’s sole focus on this tournament, the German will keep a keen eye on Rashford.
The winger was instrumental in United’s recent win over Brentford, delivering an “incredible” cross for Alejandro Garnacho’s equalising goal, according to Alan Shearer.
