“There’s something…” Wayne Rooney reveals his thoughts on Rúben Amorim after Man Utd’s Grimsby defeat

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has given his thoughts on Rúben Amorim after the embarrassing loss away at Grimsby.

On Wednesday night, Manchester United lost on penalties to Grimsby Town in League Two. One of the worst defeats in the club’s history.

Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire rescued the game and took it to penalties, but the former Brentford forward missed his second penalty in the shootout and Rúben Amorim’s side crashed out.

The Red Devils looked toothless in attack and non-existent in defence, despite Amorim naming a starting 11 full of first-team, Premier League players.

Understandably, the Portuguese manager was furious after the game and said his “players spoke really loudly” in several damming interviews where he let his true feelings show.

Rooney speaks on Amorim’s comments

Speaking on his new show, Wayne Rooney revealed his thoughts on Amorim’s post-Grimsby comments.

“The biggest concern is the manager saying that, his words after the game were damming on the players,” said United’s all-time leading goalscorer.

“If your manager comes out with them words, there’s something broken. And I think what we forget is he’s 40, he’s a young manager.”

“Manchester United is so different to where he’s been before and, you know, you come in and there’s the media team, the commercial team, the fans, the media. It’s completely different.”

Rooney continued to say: “There’s a pressure with Manchester United which he will have never of felt before, and when you’re not winning games, that can start to get to you, and it looks like yesterday was a breaking point for him.”

A welcome break for Amorim

After Burnley visits Old Trafford on Saturday, the Premier League breaks for international matches, with United’s next game being on September 14 against Manchester City.

If Amorim went into the derby off the back of the Burnley game, United could have been in for a worrying scoreline, but the international break could come at the perfect time.

The two-week break will allow Amorim to put the Grismby result behind him and focus all attention on preparing for the derby at Old Trafford.

The former Sporting CP boss can’t afford another embarrassing defeat and has to take some positives from the next two games. A win against Burnley could be crucial for his future at the club.
