“There’s no interest…” – Mistake-ridden Manchester United star set to stay after latest developments

André Onana looks set to stay at Manchester United this summer as Ruben Amorim prepares for a large-scale overhaul of the squad.

Andre Onana has been on the receiving end of a great deal of criticism since arriving at Manchester United in the summer of 2023, with the keeper making a plethora of high-profile mistakes in this period.

The most recent examples being his two critical errors against Lyon in the first round of United’s Europa League quarter-finals first-leg, tying the score 2-2.

In the time since, Ruben Amorim has re-affirmed his faith in the 29-year-old, only dropping him for the Newcastle game immediately afterwards, which United unceremoniously lost 4-1.

With second keeper Altay Bayindir potentially being allowed to leave this summer, United will want to avoid letting go of Onana too, should a viable replacement not be found in time.

‘No interest’ in Onana

On the weekend, it was reported that newly promoted Saudi Arabian club Neom had already started major discussions with Onana’s representatives.

Since then, highly-respected sports journalist Ben Jacobs has posted on X about the transfer, stating: “Understand NEOM SC are not exploring a deal for Andre Onana. There is no interest in signing the Manchester United keeper.”

United fans will have mixed feelings on this situation. In an ideal world, you would replace the shot-stopper but signing two ‘keepers this summer should not have to be a priority over other positions.

As for the Cameroonian international himself, according to reports, including one from Sky Sports, he is said to be ‘keen to leave Old Trafford’ for the Saudi outift.

Amorim rebuild in progress

Should Onana stay, he looks set to be a part of a squad that is being gutted from top to bottom, with Amorim looking to splash the cash this summer.

While United’s defensive record has been poor, with 46 goals conceded in 33 games in the Premier League, their attacking record has been no better, with only 38 goals coming in this time.

For Amorim to be able to buy the talent needed to fulfil his vision, sales will have to be made, with Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho expected to bring in significant fees.

With United in dire need of changes in both attack and defence, where will Amorim prioritise this summer, and will Onana end up staying after all?
