“There are indications…” Chelsea make fresh Jadon Sancho transfer decision after Europa Conference League final win

Chelsea have made a fresh decision surrounding signing Jadon Sancho this summer amid their obligation to purchase the Manchester United loanee for £25 million.

In the final days of the 2024 summer transfer window, Jadon Sancho departed Manchester United to join Chelsea on a season-long loan.

The agreement included an obligation for Chelsea to make the move permanent in summer 2025 for £25 million, although it later emerged that the club could opt out by paying a £5 million release fee.

Sancho, who had previously been frozen out by Erik ten Hag and loaned to Borussia Dortmund, was brought back into the United squad in July 2024. However, questions surrounding his long-term role at the club lingered, eventually leading to his exit.

Since arriving at Chelsea, Sancho has featured 41 times, scoring five goals and providing 10 assists, including a well-taken goal in the Europa Conference League final against Real Betis.

Despite his solid contributions, it remains uncertain whether Chelsea will commit to a permanent deal or send him back to Old Trafford.

Chelsea’s thoughts on Sancho after Conference League final

On Wednesday evening, Chelsea became the first team in history to hold all three UEFA trophies, adding the Europa Conference League to their Champions League and Europa League victories.

Although Enzo Maresca’s men went 1-0 down against Antony’s Real Betis, goals from Enzo Fernandez, Nicolas Jackson, Jadon Sancho, and Moises Caicedo secured the London side a victory on the night.

Although Sancho’s goal led many to believe that the club may choose to honour their £25 million buy-option, a report from The Guardian has stated otherwise.

Jacob Steinberg, Guardian reporter, stated: “There are indications they will opt against taking up their £25m option to turn Jadon Sancho’s loan from Manchester United into a permanent deal.”

Who could United sell Sancho to this summer?

Although Sancho’s value has rapidly diminished since his £73 million move from Borussia Dortmund to United in 2021, there are still plenty of clubs interested in signing him this summer.

His former club, Dortmund, is reportedly interested in bringing him back to the Signal Iduna Park for a third time in his career.

While fellow Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen has been linked, the appointment of former United boss Erik ten Hag makes this deal unlikely, given the pair’s falling out at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, former United boss Jose Mourinho is also said to be keen on the player, having given approval for Fenerbahce to attempt the signing, with Galatasaray also linked.
