Former Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has revealed who he would choose to replace Rúben Amorim as the new manager at Old Trafford.
Rúben Amorim became Manchester United manager in November 2024, with many fans excited for a new start under one of the most exciting coaches in Europe. One of his last games for Sporting CP was seeing off Manchester City in the Champions League away from home.
However, the reality of Amorim’s tenure has been much more disappointing than what United fans imagined. The Portuguese coach led the Red Devils to 15th in the Premier League last season, but many remained optimistic.
The pre-season tour of the United States gave fans hope – especially after the brilliant performance against Bournemouth – but that form hasn’t been seen since the opening 20 minutes against Arsenal in the first match of the season.
Amorim now looks like a dead man walking, with many feeling it’s only a matter of time before the United manager is sacked or he resigns. United have to win against Sunderland this weekend, or it may be Amorim’s time.
Foster names Iraola as ideal replacement
Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has been one of the many managers linked with the United job in recent days, and former goalkeeper Ben Foster has said why he’d be the perfect replacement for Amorim.
“Iraola is the one for me,” said Foster on his YouTube Channel. “To lose half your squad, half your starting line-up, and then still be just as impressive, for me, that means you’re a proper coach.”
“But if they’re trying to get Iraola or [Oliver] Glasner, then it’s going to cost an awful lot of money. I know Glasner’s contract is up in the summer, but he’s going to want £250,000-a-week himself as a wage and they’re [Palace] going to want compensation to some point, aren’t they?”
Unlike Glasner, Iraola would likely revert to a back four formation, which could help him gain support from United fans, as many could see Glasner as no change, despite his principles differing from Amorim’s.
Foster says United could move for Southgate
Foster continued to say: “I just think with Gareth Southgate, it’s so different to what they’ve ever done and what they’re doing isn’t working.”
“You look at the past four or five managers since Sir Alex Ferguson went, they’re just not working are they? It’s as simple as that.
“I just think with how hard it is to play for Manchester United, with the pressure involved and pulling that shirt on, it just doesn’t seem to work so I think sometimes you might need a bit of a different approach.”
Many appear to have come to the conclusion that it’s time for United to make a change, but do they go for proven Premier League – Iraola or Glasner – or a new option like Southgate or Xavi?
