Manchester United ended their six-year barren streak of no silverware on Sunday and Luke Shaw hopes that the Carabao Cup is the first of many trophies to come.

Luke Shaw was one of United’s best players in their 2-0 victory against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium this past Sunday. Erik ten Hag’s men seized the opportunity to claim the first piece of silverware available this season and the first in the Dutchman’s tenure.

Shaw proved why he is seen by many as one of the best in the world at his position over the 90 minutes by being impenetrable to many of Newcastle’s attacks as well as showing his offensive threat with his wicked ball from a set-piece finding Casemiro to net the opener.

It was the first time in his career that the Englishman started a final at Wembley domestically and the success at full-time made it a day that will live long in his memories.

Speaking to the club’s media team on Monday the 27-year-old reflected on how important it was for him to be in the starting XI by saying:

“For me personally, it was a really special day, we have won trophies before but for different circumstances I wasn’t able to play. To play in one and win it was a really nice feeling.”

United’s no.23 then comments on the squad’s camaraderie as they celebrated the win as one big collective unit.

“I think yesterday after the game we celebrated as a team there and in the dressing room, we enjoyed the moment.”

But due to United’s packed schedule, with the Red Devils hosting West Ham United in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday, the defender knows that they can’t afford to bask in the glory for very long.

“It’s back to reality now and we have a massive game on Wednesday in another competition that we want to win. We are back in training today and are getting back to that.”

Manchester United are still in three competitions and Shaw shares the same hunger for trophies as his manager as his desire for glory echos Ten Hag’s open letter to the fans.

“Whenever you come to Man Utd the aim is always to be winning trophies, I think we are in that moment now where we have got the taste of one and after a long while we want more.

“We are still in three competitions and we want to look to do our best and hopefully add many more trophies to this collection.”

Erik ten Hag’s start at United would not have many betting on the Reds being where they are in the league table now and with another trophy added to the cabinet and Shaw puts all this success down to the Dutchman.

“If you look at the start of the season, how we started, nobody would have thought we would of won our first trophy six/seven months later.

“It’s a credit to him [Erik ten Hag] the way he has transformed the team and he has brought that winning spirit back. We as players really believe in him and we are really enjoying playing under him. Hopefully this is just the start of something special.”

It certainly does look like the beginning of a new golden era at United, who knows what the end of the season might bring?
